It has been a while since I've been over here and wanted to share my first Kiger (and 1st mustang) with you. Xana (#8249) is a now 5 yo mare and is infoal. I've been having the best time working with her. And I think we've been doing well with our progress. She is very food motivated and has the sweetest eyes.

I know I met a few of you at Burns and learned a lot. Any other adopters here to share about their new Kigers?

Suzy

What an absolutely gorgeous, sweet face!  When is the baby due?

She has a very lovely face and soft kind eye. I can't see the second picture, but I'm guessing that we will see a girl in bloom. Tell us more about how she is adjusting. I see she has on a nice new halter for starts and she looks groomed!

Suzy I remember at Reno in 2006 you were looking around for your first Kiger. Nice to see you get your horse!

While I've heard stories about how difficult and older mare can be, I think she's perfect for me...not too easy or difficult. She has not shown any sign of aggression since day one. She has had her panicky moments, but they are getting less frequent. And she sneers and wrinkles her nose at me sometimes though Ü The bottom photo is of her in the corrals at Burns, so the halter is the one they put on before loading her. It had a rope attached that came off before she got home, so she's basically been naked while I've worked with her. I can now put her rope halter on over the web halter and lead her around a bit. She's still not too sure about the rope coming out from her, but is now more likely to stop when she feels the pressure as she spooks. I can touch and brush her every where except her lower hind legs and tail and that's only because I haven't tried yet...I'm working my way slowly back there. She likes having her teats rubbed which really suprised me. She knows I keep carrots in my pocket and will try telling me when she thinks she's earned one. I think one of the major turning points was when she learned that grain was tasty.  I began touching her face while holding her grain bucket and plan on using it to sneak a shot in her soon. I can clean out her front feet now, too, and can pick up her hind ones with a rope. I am currently working on despooking with a few items, leading, coming off the halter pressure when spooking, and working with her hind end. I've been trying to keep things fairly quite for the foal's sake while still making progress. She's kept at a boarding facility that gives many lessons to kids. She is right near one of the arenas so has gotten use to  a lot of commotion outside the pen. I know moms and kids feed her grass through the bars. She tries really hard for me and doesn't quit. I look forward to spending time with her every day. I'm not sure when she is due, but suspect April some time. Her feed was just increased a couple of weeks ago and she is really blossomming, but no milk coming in yet. That's our story in a nutshell.

Congragulations Suzy! She looks very sweet. I can't wait to see the baby. Did you know she was in foal with you adopted her? What are you going to do with the baby? You got a good deal, 2 for 1 :)
