Shelley,
Sorry if forgot to get back to this. I needed to check the name of the product when I went to the barn and forgot to post. I use a product called Biogard in my stock tanks and it is WONDERFUL! I highly recommend it! It is a very safe enzyme and beneficial bacteria that works on organics in the water to keep it fresh, clean, clear and odor free. It comes in teabag type packets that will treat 500 gal a day for a month. You buy a starter pack first because you need the cup size reuseable weighted dispenser to put the packet in so that it drops to the bottom of the tank.
I have a power washer that I deep clean the tanks with to get the crud off of the inside of the tank. You should start with a clean tank and then add the Biogard and my water stays clear and palatable and they drink more. We have lots of rust in our water so it get nasty quickly in the summer and causes the tanks to scum up fast and grow algae. Also, in the summer I keep the water level so that I can add more cold water on hot days to keep it cool. When the water is too warm horses don't consume as much. Bo coliced once in hot weather, prior to using this product. It was very hot and very humid and tank cleaning was on the days agenda, but we were a day late evidently because when we went to power wash the tank we found Bo very sick, and I believe that he had not been drinking enough that day, as the water was not fresh. It may have also just been that he was sick because he had a fever and was weak. He had eaten well in the morning but I think that he just didn't want the tepid stale water. If he was sick that would have made it worse. That cost me $400.00
I can assure you that will never happen again! Fresh clean cool water first and foremost!
http://www.bioverse.com/tank.htm I see that DrsFosterSmith a veterinary supply company also recommend and sell it. Google stock tank cleaners and there are a number of products and companies.
