Hey guys, I'm new to the board. I just bought a V and I found the board via Google while searching for more information about V's.
Anyway, I'm having a bit of trouble dating the instrument. First off, unfortunately, almost none of the hardware is original on it. The pick-ups, tuners, pot knobs, bridge are all non-original. The only thing that is original to the instrument is the body/neck (obviously), the pickguard and truss cover, and the pots (I think).
Here's where my dating troubles begin. The serial number on the back of the headstock reads "522586." It is pressed into the back of the headstock (not ink printed). "Made in U.S.A." or "U.S.A." is nowhere to be found on the back of the headstock. The pots are CTS, all numbered "1377517," which evidently dates them to 1975.
I see that 522586 was a serial number used in 1968 and 1974/75, but if it were 1974/75, it would have been on the back of the headstock along with a "Made in U.S.A." stamp (which, again, my instrument doesn't have), so I'm a bit confused.
Another interesting tidbit: The guitar is painted a white/cream color, obviously original by looking in the body cavities. What is odd though, is that the front of the headstock is also painted white, whereas it seems in all of the pictures of V's from '68 or so the front of the headstock is always black, despite whatever color the body is. So, just to be clear, the front and back of the headstock, the neck, and the body are all painted the same white/cream color.
I figured there's quite a few knowledgeable people on this board, can any of you guys help me date it?
