Hey guys, I'm new to the board. I just bought a V and I found the board via Google while searching for more information about V's.

Anyway, I'm having a bit of trouble dating the instrument. First off, unfortunately, almost none of the hardware is original on it. The pick-ups, tuners, pot knobs, bridge are all non-original. The only thing that is original to the instrument is the body/neck (obviously), the pickguard and truss cover, and the pots (I think).

Here's where my dating troubles begin. The serial number on the back of the headstock reads "522586." It is pressed into the back of the headstock (not ink printed). "Made in U.S.A." or "U.S.A." is nowhere to be found on the back of the headstock. The pots are CTS, all numbered "1377517," which evidently dates them to 1975.

I see that 522586 was a serial number used in 1968 and 1974/75, but if it were 1974/75, it would have been on the back of the headstock along with a "Made in U.S.A." stamp (which, again, my instrument doesn't have), so I'm a bit confused.

Another interesting tidbit: The guitar is painted a white/cream color, obviously original by looking in the body cavities. What is odd though, is that the front of the headstock is also painted white, whereas it seems in all of the pictures of V's from '68 or so the front of the headstock is always black, despite whatever color the body is. So, just to be clear, the front and back of the headstock, the neck, and the body are all painted the same white/cream color.

I figured there's quite a few knowledgeable people on this board, can any of you guys help me date it?

My main purpose here is to figure out the correct year of manufacture so that I can try and put it back to "as close to original" as I can. So, once we're able to pinpoint a date, I'd appreciate it if you can point me in the right direction as to what the correct tuners, pick-ups, knobs, bridge for the instrument are, and where I might be able to get a good deal on some stuff. I'm not looking to break the back here, just to end up with a nice playing, original looking instrument.

Welcome. You have a 75 V. Pictures are mandatory.

Thanks for the response veeman. I'll try to get some pics up in a minute.

While it may seem obvious to you, I'm still new at this: Can you explain why it's a '75 not a '68?

Also, I have the original case, might that help date it (or further prove what date it is)?

Hmm, evidently HTML does not work. Here's a try with Ubb:

Definitely a mid-70's V, most likely a 1975 if pots are original to the guitar.  Case is a mid-70's case, the pots have the '75 date, two numbers following the 137 are last two digits of the year, has the "volute" on the back of the headstock and the serial number inside the lowered oval section is typical to guitars of that era.

Welcome, Brad!
As Veeman said, it's a 1975 V. There's nothing unusual about the white headstock. I know the '67 Reissues have black headstocks (on the face), but they're a different animal. I was pretty surprised to see your V here because I recently sold one just like it on ebay! Its SN was 520072. Like yours, it had no "Made in USA" stamp and no cellophane strip (which normally carried the SN & Made in USA on it) inside the oval impression. When I first received mine, because of this, I thought it was a refinish, but I was puzzled because there was no indication that it was. Anyway, in the closet it went, for years. Then, about three years ago I saw another one like it, also white, with a very close SN with no stamp, on ebay. The seller said it had been a NAMM guitar. I could only surmise that Gibson hurriedly applied SNs to these to get them to the church on time!

I know Veeman expects me to put pics of mine up since I brought it up. I'll post pics of mine on this thread when I get the chance. (I'm heading out of town tomorrow, and I didn't really have time to reply...but the V always takes precedence to all things!)

bond_fan - Thanks for the info, man; I really appreciate it.

MedallionV283 - Thanks for the info and for sharing that story. I'd be very interested to see some pictures of that V, being that the serial numbers are so close and everything.

Like I said in my second post I'm really interested in trying to get the period correct stuff to put back on my V. Specifically: the tuners, bridge/tailpiece, knobs, and neck pu. The guitar had an old DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge, and I think I'm going to put that back in there. Seems historically accurate ;).

I realize that eBay is, as always, the "go to" source for all of this stuff, but if anyone has any of these items that I need sitting around, let me know and we'll see if we can't work something out.

Thanks!

Rank is given by how many posts you have. Got something Gibson V related, go to the proper section on the home page and start a new thread.

 That´s a nice V!
I´ve wanted to have a ´75 V in white for a long time, but they are hard to find.
Take your time in finding parts of the matching year for it, and it´ll be a gem!
