They have an oval impression where the serial # sticker is placed, it says "Limited Edition" on the sticker. On mine, part of the sticker is worn away, so the entire serial # is no longer legible. The rumor has gone around that these were made from leftover Medallion bodies, but I don't know if that's true or not.

Hey SteVe! How's Minnesota doing? Still warm out here, you should come to Cali again & escape the cold... Rudi's manners have gotten a lot better, I promise he'll leave Becky alone next time! :)

Re:Limited Edition 75
(Date Posted:06-11-2009 23:06:27)
I've had mine since early 1980, and two of my roommates had V's one a medallion, one a possible 70? They both had shallower necks, my 75 white LE's neck is higher off the body by at least a fretboard thickness. Their naturals had basically the fretboard coming up from the body. Neither had the oval. Yes the Medallion is out there still but snapped the neck a few years back and sits unrepaired in it's original case, a lot had been changed on it then, covers off, brass pick guard and medallion is loose in the case I think. The LE is in Mint condition and makes even me sound good. I have only raised the bridge at the low E slightly and then had the intonation set for 10s when I first bought it but play 9 sets now. No other tool has ever touched it and the Gibson strap was in the case when I bought it. As far as I can tell there is a quality to the guitar that's a little above normal. If there are only 162 shipped that year in white how many are LE? I know you guys like pictures, where do you host them?

No different raise on the necks of my 75std, 76LE, 79std, 80std.
The limited is a much better guitar though. Sustain and resonans beats the others easily. Explanation I got is that the LE is what the gibson Custom shop became. Another thought is about colors. Are the Black and Whites all LE?

Re:Limited Edition 75

Have you checked any pre-75 guitars? There is a picture of Michael Schenker's V <http://www.flying-v.ch/collect/msv1fp.jpg> from this site that show the Rise or extra thickness. I am talking about the distance between the parallel surfaces of the body and fret board. It seems to me to be a fretboard thickness but I only had a Medallion and 70 both natural to compare it to but the difference is substantial up close.
As to sustain this guitar has it! When I first saw the guitar it was in its case and I pulled it out and played it acoustically and decided to buy it. It took me a couple of weeks to negotiate the price but I never plugged it in! My friend thought I was crazy but I told him it sounds so good I fix the electronics luckily I never had to.

Re:Limited Edition 75
(Date Posted:10-11-2009 17:10:59)
I have a Medallion, a '75 LE, a '79 Silverburst, & an '81 Silverburst, & they all have the substantial rise between the body & the fretboard. Those bodies are much thinner than the reissues, & there is no angle between the body & neck, they're parallel.
I've asked before, & never got an answer - Do the '67-'69 guitars have the raised fretboard? Is there an angle between the body & neck like the reissues, or are they parallel?
Or maybe one of you lucky guys that have a late-'60s V could send it my way for me to play for a little while?

There's no difference between the parallel rise on my LE and my std's. I haven't measured it but it looks to be the same. Absolutely not the big difference you are talking about. Exact same guitar in all but the oval decal.
No 67´s don't have the raised board. It's angled and reminds of the RI's but mayby a little bit more raised. Body is almost as thin as the 70's though. But the 69 prototype first ed short headstock are raised and parallel. It lacks the volute but seem to be the same guitar as the medallion.

Thanks for the insight on the '67s - I've seen pics in various places, & it always seems hard to see the neck joint from the side. I'm assuming the Custom Shop Historics have the correct joint & body thickness? I really would like to get one of those, but $$ don't permit.

I did not know that the bodies on the 70s were thinner. Friends who have played mine always remark how light it is and also the neck pickup sound seems to intrigue them. I know "Heavy" guitars as I have owned a Travis Bean since the 70's, that guitar can hurt you if you are not careful! No guitar plays so smooth or sounds so good to me as my 75 and I've never modded it. Maybe I'm just so used to it but a lot has to be it's acoustic (Unplugged) sound.
Were there Limited Edition Les Paul's, Explorer's etc... with the oval?

The one on eBay right now looks to be a good deal, it's at $800.00 w/ 3 hours to go... Hope I don't start a bidding frenzy!

I played a CS historic and a real 68 right after. They are very similiar. The headstock shape on the CS is not exact (a little bit more flat on the top on the CS) and some small details differ but they feel VERY close. Neck and body thickness, nut wid and so on are almost the same. Gonna get a Historic one day to.

How can you save these images? <http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-1975-Gibson-Flying-V-Guitar-100-Stock-CLEAN_W0QQitemZ360206778384QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar?hash=item53ddff4010> Some great shots...but I've never put a screwdriver to mine. Some one needs to archive this group of images!!!
Do you see the oval around the serial number! It is not LE but has the oval.

I caught up with my old roommate And he said his V is not a Medallion, I don't know why I thought it was, Old age I guess. He thinks it is a 75 but the neck was not raised, I am telling him about this site. It has been repaired and refinished from natural to black.
