Neat. It must have taken quite some time to unpack the collection and then pack together again.

Sweet!! I'm impressed. The orange hollow top gibson (335?) looks amazing. I'd like to see a V in that color. Mayby that should be a future project for me, to find a poor condition 75-82 and refinish it like that.

in order:

Veeman - in fact, the Robot makes it easy.  I can lug around 5 guitars, or 1.  The Robot sounds good, so 1 it is.  If I don't want to use it, the core 5 are Black V, Explorer, SG (Cherry), Les Paul (Wine), 335 (Cherry).

71 - thanks!

Morten - it took me 4 hours to set up and then tear down that pic.  I snapped individual pics along the way.  I figure I ran up and down the stairs of my house about 75 times doing it.  whew.

Robin - thanx.  in fact there are 8 more.  here's the complete famlily shot:

if someone else out there has the whole set of V, Explorer, Moderne, Reverse V and Reverse Explorer out there, I don't know if they've taken a picture of the set yet.  This might be the first image of the set in the world.  Zilmo over at the gear page might have gotten one.  His collection of oddball Gibson Pointy's makes me weep.

V-Axe.  The orange one is a Chet Atkins Tennesean.  It's like a 335 except: single cutaway, ebony board, 25.25" scale length, chromite (gibson for "balsa") as body block wood, different control layout.  Oh and it's about $500 cheaper.  It's a great sounding guitar, and it's light.  The orange looks great.  They also came in wine red. I prefere the Sunburst Orange.

here's a closer look:

Big Mac - I've been playing for 20 years (my god, why aren't I better?)  I've been collecting as long.  There's probably been 10-12 along the way that are no longer with me, or got "upgraded"  I think it averages out to less than 2 a year.

Very Impressive. Jeez, you got a small fortune in stands alone, lol.

Now, here is a game. Each of us will take 2 guitars. Lets see what you end up with at the end of the week.
I'll take the Black V, and the Wine Red Standard LP.

actually, I could use like 13 more stands.  I've started to negotiate for a stand thrown in gratis when I buy now.  so far so good. (OK, it worked once, but I plan to continue doing it)

you're only leaving me the Reverse V, the 335 and the SG?!?!?!

Only 16 left to go, 6 days. By the way, Jef, what year were my V & LP made? My very first Gibson LP was a Wine Red Standard. I want to say it was an 01, but can't remember for sure.

That blue SG is a thing of beauty! Since we're snatching 2 each, I'll take that & the red ES-335...It would appear that V-Axe has preempted me on the SG, but actually, he has to change his pick!

 jeffwith1f!
I´ve always loved the shape of the Gibson RD, but it must be really bright sounding?
And heavy?
Chet Atkins Tennesean is gorgeous!

Two things, Jef...
Could you fill us on on the blue SG? The color resembles Fender's Ice Blue Metallic, only your color looks even more stunning! I truly want one! And the RD--I love the richness of the body wood. What is that, maple? What really makes this axe stand out, methinks, is that bound maple fingerboard. It looks downright exotic.

RE:I spent some time today photographing the family
(Date Posted:19-09-2008 21:28:29)

here's the 335

Vman, the Black V is a 1990 67 RI.  second year I believe.  I bought it new close to the end of the year, but I believe it dates from mid year.  by all acounts from the guitar snobs that pick it up, it is a particularly well built, good sounding, light 67 RI.   The Standard is a '97  no trace of flame, I don't know if "Plain Top" was a specific designation of Paul from that year, but it's a great playing, non nonsense Les Paul Standard.

The Blue SG is from this year.  The colour is "Blue Mist", and struck me especially as it has a coloured headstock, which is atypical for Gibsons.  it is a Limited Run of SG Special, that I think were originally released earlier this year for Guitar Center only, and now they seem to have trickled into Canada via Yorkville who is actually a huge distributor of Gibson's (all canadian sold Gibsons come in through them, and then local dealers go to them, which is why more shops stock Gibson up here, not as draconian on the distribution rules as they deal with the Yorkville proxy instead of the big G directly).  it is not a full gloss finish, but it is also not exactly a faded.  the finish is satin, as best I can tell, as such it kind of prices itself inbetween the fadeds and full on proper finished guitars at around $900-$1000.  The colour is a shade greyer than a pelham blue.  we'll see if it goes green with age...I guess that's the nitro overcoat though, and I don't know if it has that (smells like nitro though)

The RD.  yes.  maple neck.  it was the first Gibson I had ever seen in person with one, and yeah, they are pretty rareish.  Don't see many of them around, but they are not unfindable, nor out of touch with reality in terms of price.  It also has a 25 1/4" scale length.  The onboard early Moog Active filters do make it sound quite bright, but you can roll it down.  The tone knobs on it center detent around 5, over that is an active treble boost, and under is an active cut.  It is also a Maple Body. It is pretty heavy, but not exactly boat anchor like like a heavy les paul, as the body is comparatively thin (almost not unlike the 75 run of V's).  a close look also shows that it's headstock, which is the typical Gibson "open book" style is actually significantly wider than my other headstocks.  It seems to stick out as the only one of that planform that is different for some reason.  Of my real gibsons, it is the old man at 77.  I guess I'm older, but not by much.  It sounds like an angry tele, it really does.  it's my "I don't need a Fender" Gibson.

The Tennesean is gorgeous.  It's back has a very subtle flame, and is just one of the prettiest expanses of wood I have ever set eyes on.  I got lucky, and my Grandmother gave me a $10,000 "early" inheritance before she died (she was reasonably well off, not dynastic wealth (damn it!), but wanted to give my brother and I some $$$ to enjoy while she was still alive to see us enjoy it).  Bless her, that was awesome.  I paid off some debt I had accumulated, but I went to a post Xmas sale at Long and McQuade, walked in and left with a 50W Marshall JCM 900 head, and the Tennesean.  Didn't really think about it or anything, just sort of pointed at them, played them for 10 minutes, and said "wrap it up!"  No buyer's remorse, as it was "found" money that I was instructed to do something fun with.  Damn, I am a fortunate person.  My first tube amp and my first semi hollow.  They have both made me very happy, and I use and cherish both all the time.  It's probably my wife's favorite guitar, based on it's appearance.  it made me get into Chet.  that man could play.  The 900 remains my main amp at home (I run it on half wattage into a great 800 series 1X12, sounds fab..the 900 cabs sound brittle by comparison)

I didn't post it here, as it's not pointy enough for this forum, but given the interest, perhaps I should have...

You spent so much time accumulating guitars that you've obviously had none left over to pull weeds and fix up that deck!

And I can hear your wife now; "Don't you think you have enough guitars? I think you should sell some of them and use the money to put that addition on the house."

What she's actually thinking is; "Hmmm. Winter is coming and I always wanted a mink coat."

she wants a new car...
sigh...

I suppose I should support the american auto makers (as they are responsible for my current livelyhood) but the only things american I really feel the need to buy are Guitars and Vacations.

still.  even if I sold them all, I could only afford a medium sized, non luxury sedan.  or a reasonably nice moderately used car.
honestly, I'll get more milage out of the guitars.

our car is 11 years old though....

Jef,

If you want to buy an American car, I suggest you buy one, like... now.  Of course, after bankruptcy, perhaps they'll have to give them away.  My suggestion (and I know it's not practical) is: wait till next year, see if GM survives, then buy her a new Camaro.  After all, it's built in Canada!

I have this '87 VW Polo which is just wide enough for my Explorer cases on the back seat + enough space for a combo and pedal board in the back. It also goes 14.67 Km per liter.
Get her a wide economy class car and use the saved $$$ to buy her a mink fur or another serious guitar, he he.
