Hi, I'm new to the forum.
I'm about to buy a 82 "The V".  It is a antique natural finish
just like the one in the gallery here.   Does anyone know if
any of these were made without the volute ?  Also, is the backside of this guitar
supposed to be just a clear transparent finish or is it stained ?  I thought mahogany
was more of a dark color rather than a light color like maple ?

Hi,

I've got an '81 in tobacco sunburst. As far as I know all "The V"s have a volute.

My luthier/repair friend that does all my work says that the body is maple.

Mine is a factory second. Is has a place on the back where the wood split just enough
to show its real color before getting stained.
Having a maple top and body, you might expect "the V" to have a bright tone,
but it really doesn't. It's very evenly toned. I'm sure you'll enjoy yours.
I really like mine. It's not my number one, but I don't think I'll ever
get rid of it.

There's also a variation of this model called the CMT for Curly Maple Top.
Basically it's constructed the same way but with a curly figured instead of flamed top.

If you'd like to see my "The V" you can visit my web site by clicking the little house icon
at the top right of my post.

Enjoy,
71MedV

ps If you visit my webpage, you'll know why "The V" is not my number one.

Got pictures? THE V should all have a volute. I don't recall ever seeing one that wasn't dark stained on the back.

Sorry guys, I'm having issues with photobucket tonight.  I'll be sure to get some pics up in the next few days....... after I have it.   Volute or no volute, it has the serial # and made in usa stamped in the correct font and location, the front of the headstock looks genuine.  Ya, I have already been to your site man....thanx for doing such a great job and your The V looks exactly like another that I have looked at in person except it was in such rough shape and the guy wouldnt budge below 1600.
thanx, Richard

Do "The V":s always have a full maple body?
I would be interested in getting one, but too bright guitars aren´t my thing.
Although the few i played were´nt all too bright. Old strings perhaps...

Maple top, mahogany body underneath. I believe they have a 3 piece maple neck.

I got a reply from the gibson customer service dept.  as follows so now I'm starting......

to wonder if anybody knows what's real and what isn't.  I have held an 83 with the volute and
it certainly looked all original.  Now I have this 82 with no volute and it is certainly original.......

Thank you for writing.  We used the volute from approx. 1970-1980, so 1982 instruments should not have a volute.
Thank you for the inquiry.

Best regards,

Benton Cummings

Just because you work at Gibson it doesn't mean that you have all the knowledge about the past models. I think most of us here know way more about V's than any employee at Gibson. I mean don't ask Mr M. Schenker if you wanna know how many different pressings there were of UFO's albums...ask a die-hard fan. As for volute I've never seen a "The V" without one but on the other hand I've seen crazy models like a 1984 Block Inlay from gibson custom shop without volute and otherwise correct specs.

Well heres another one without the volute. Looks original to me. Mayby some of the late models were made with no volute.

Wow ! thanx V-axe, that is a good confirmation.  It even has the grover tuners like mine.
Ya the gibson guy I phoned just looked it up in a book and gave the same answer as
the email response from the gibson guy.  Anyway I am not a very good player but this
thing is definitely a notch above my highway 1 strat.
