Absolutely Gorgeous!
Amazing job. My jaw dropped when the pics loaded.
What is the pickguard going to look like?
Ingenious using a neck plate as a shim. I'm gonna have to remember that one. The control plate and knobs are perfect.

That is cool as hell bro! It looks great without a guard, you might want to re-think it IMO. Good luck with it I bet it cranks. I would love to hear some clips of those TV's.

Eric, I think it looks really fantastic
I don't think you really NEED a pickguard either, but if you do, I'd like to only see one on the treble bout and not a full one(like a gretsch, lined up with the neck edge and butting up near it, possibly extending down to the control plate{with a cutout for the upper round of the control plate) I think either silver backed or just a clear one would be cool.
Kinda like this:
Paul Setzer makes awesome adhesive decals, perhaps he could make one similar to the gretch writing saying Hi-Lo Caster or something like that? You could stick it to the back of the pickguard and spray the color over it to give you that stenciled letter look.
Brian, those are stock RI Gretsch knobs. They repro the ones used in the early to mid 60's before Baldwin took over. I think they look really nice on that.
GEESH.... you already want him to relic it?? hehe ....I think I created a monster.....
You already got my mind going too.... stain it brown.....painted fake f hole..... voila! Tennycaster !!
I would image it sounds like a beefed up Gretsch Corvette, which are pretty groovy guitars. There was a guitarist playing for a girl I think was named Shelby Lynne on Letterman last night, and he had some sort of custom strat with a Hi Lo in the neck. Sounded really cool.
Anyway, glad to see it done! I hope you enjoy it!

Thanks, everybody! Yeah, I'm pretty darn happy with the outcome.
I've gone back and forth on the pickguard issue a lot, but I think I'm going for it. First of all, I really LIKE pickguards on guitars! Secondly, as you can see below, my design covers up the bridge hole that's peeking out.
Jeff, you were pretty close, but here's what I came up with (the one below is a paper cut-out...the real one will be black-white-black):

I think it should look pretty cool...we'll see when it gets here!

I think she's purdy dang cool already Eric! I can't stop looking at the photos
I think the pickguard is gonna be cool - you could have Paul make you up a Fetsch decal for the bottom back of the guard heehee - but I think that's going to be the icing on the cake!
I wish I could see that color in person, it's so unique.

Wow Eric, very , very nice indeed! I vote pickguard on, and I like the shape you thought up - but doesn't that guitar deserve a clear lucite guard sprayed silver from the back? (you could even put "Fetsch" decal on it like Mandy suggested - or a "E.B." signpost, or "New Yorker" instead of "Tennessean"?)
It looks great in any case, and it's not helping me get rid of GAS for a Bigsby equipped baritone tele ...

hehe, me too. I like everyones ideas, but yeah, I can see your point about hiding the oh-so-tiny hole...it would bug me too. I think the BWB guard is gonna make that thing pop and click!!! My Tele-Gibs neck sat deep too, I read somewhere about some Tele guys dropping a quarter in the pocket...so I did. I worked perfect and you can't tell it's there. I'll bet you just stare and smile at that Tele every day...I would. Can't wait to see the kustom guard on...how about some engraving on it?

Here's some extra Mustang bridge info I forgot to add for all of you about to take the B5 plunge...
In order to make the radius of the bridge (somewhere between 9.5" and 12", I think) match the radius of the neck (7.5"), I had to file down the A, D, G and B barrels a bit, so that they sat a bit lower. Set both of your E's where you normally have them, and measure the string heightsat the 12th or 17th fret (whichever you prefer). Then remove each barrel individually, file it a little, and measuring again, set the string heights to match all the way across. Make sure that you're filing exactly where the bottom of the barrel is...use the retaining screw to line it up in a vise evenly.
The process really makes a difference in action...highly recommended!

Good one, RAO! I was actually thinking of a Telessean...
Well, gang, here's the final version of the HiLoCaster with the pickguard attached. After a little filing here and there, it fits like a glove!

It covers the bridge pickup hole edge perfectly, just as I hoped it would. Thanks to WD Music (http://www.pickguards.com/) for cutting out my template for me...those guys are great!

Very impressive work Eric! (Will you build me a Baritone tele? )
One thing I have to ask though - while I'm not a fan of high output pickups, Hilo's were always a little too much the other opposite to me - a very cool *sound*, but it would almost disappear once the drummer hits something...
Isn't this guitar considerably "quieter" than your other teles? (considering a Hilotron's 3.something K output, or are TV's hilos wound a little hotter?)

Walter, based on your post, I did a test using the HiLoCaster and my Nocaster, which has a high-output Nocaster bridge pup (about 10.4K) and 52RI neck pup. While the Nocaster definitely has more output and "growl", the HiLoCaster held it's own pretty well. There appears to be more low end on the H-Caster, especially when the two pups are on together. If my memory serves me, I think the H-Caster has more output than my '64 Tenny did, which isn't surprising, I guess, since it's magnets were almost 40 years old! I'll do so more tests and report back...
Thanks, b...It's nice to have it completed, finally! My next project is to finish my Candy Apple Red w/white binding '62 RI Tele body/Nocaster neck project. I've been waiting for months to put Bardens in it, but since THAT ain't gonna happen, I'm going to try out Kinman AVn-60s in it, probably with a 4-way switch. I'm going to use the original bridge plate from my '73 (now B5'ed) with StewMac compensated saddles. And then I think I may have enough Teles for a while!
A question for the masses: since this new one will be a '62-like beast, would you put on a Dakaware, a 52RI or a "tophat" switch tip? Hardly earth-shattering subject matter, but I just can't decide!

Here's a kooky one. today i got a 78 tele that used to belong to a somewhat famous nashville guitarist. it is dark brownish see thru red. the story that i got was that it was called transparent burgandy. strange color, maybe a one off. but here's the really weird thing. it has a matching dark redish brown top hat switch tip. ????????????

OK, here's the latest and probably last one for a while...I'm TeleModded out!
It has a Fender MIJ '62 RI Candy Apple Red body with white binding and a Fender '52 RI/Nocaster neck, a '73 original bridge plate with StewMac compensated saddles, B-W-B pick guard, and Kinman AVn-60 pickups in the neck and bridge. I decided to leave the wiring 3-way, and finally opted for the authentic Dakaware switch top. I haven't had much of a chance to check it out yet, but so far, it sounds great...

What a piece of junk guitar Chorks.
I hate how the CAR contrasts so nicely with the white binding and maple neck. I bet it's stupid-ass light and sounds just like those Teles I hear on all of them Country records I hate. It propably has low action and plays really easy. Nobody likes that.
What a hunka crap.

Chorks, that's a beautiful guitar. I can see how you had a dilema about whether or not to put a pickguard on it. I scrolled back and forth between picks of it without and with your black pattern trying to decide which I liked more. The white outline of the finished pickguard really looks good.

Well, the Mustang bridge on the HiLoCaster was driving me nuts, so I devised a new, improved version. The Mustang bridge, aside from being a complete pain in the butt to adust individual saddle height on (think "filing"), caught the strings being fed from the Bigsby at an odd angle, making them sound pretty dull and lifeless. The high E used to pop out of the saddle every now and then, too.
What I did was what I had done on a custom Tele-like guitar I made back in the late 70s (and something that others of you have done similarly)...I cut down a Fender six-saddle bridge and and now it plays and sounds amazing! Wish I'd done it in the first place! Those two screwed-on pieces on either side of the bridge are just there to look cool (and hide the holes from the old bridge's dowel cups!
NOW I think it's finally finished!

hey chorks,
did you grind down the mustang bridge? if you grind down the side without the screws you can get a great break angle over the bridge.

Well, I actually THOUGHT I was done with the HiLoCaster until the ever-talented Mark Johnston produced some beautiful brass saddles to replace the stock Fender chrome ones I had been using. YOWZA!! How beautiful are they??? They fit perfectly, of course, look cool and best of all, SOUND great!!! They really do reintroduce some lost "spank" to the Bigsby mix.
Thanks, Mark!!!

Well thank you Mandy, and thank you too Eric. There are some pretty cool ideas on this board and I'm glad I can help make some of them possible. I love this stuff. I made some saddles similar to Erics for my Jag bridge, and some stainless body cups too, but now that I returned my MIM standard for a 50's classic, I think I'll keep the stock bridge instead and see if I can make some compensated saddles for it. I just need to find out what angle to drill the intonation screw holes.
Mark.

Well, I thought the HiLoCaster was complete until our resident mechanical genius, Mark Johnston, provided me with the ultimate Bigsby mod...a slotted roller to hold the strings in place:

Works like a charm! He also remove the "play" in the back roller, as well...thanks, Mark!
OK, now I think it's done!

The Hi-Lo trons seem to be the same dimensions as the filter trons. What did you use as a temp plate to route the pup cavities out. Are they the same as P-90 soap bar cavities?

Flakey, here's the blurb on the HiLos from T.V. Jones' website (www.tvjones.com):
TV-HT1
The first generation TV-HT1 single coil pickup is designed to fit into a traditional Filter'Tron?/FONT> cavity
An improved replica of the vintage HiLo'Tron?/FONT> single coil pickup, the TV-HT1 is designed to produce twangy bass and crisp, high trebles. To make this possible, the TV-HT1 uses one TV Classic bobbin, but wound with thinner magnet wire. Large #8 slotted set screws are used for the pole screws.
The first generation TV-HT1 fits into standard Filter'Tron cavities, making it easy to install into newer reissues as well as vintage instruments. If two TV-HT1 pickups are installed in a guitar, the center position is hum cancelling. The bridge pickup has a wide pole spacing for better sensitivity, and a 3/4" tall cover for close adjustment. The neck pickup is 5/8 " tall.
All TV-HT1 models are available with chrome, nickel, or gold plated covers.
PRODUCT
Bridge TV-HT1 $105.00
Neck TV-HT1 $105.00
Specify: Chrome, Nickel, or Gold (add $5.00 ea. for Gold)
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
I don't believe the routing is the same as a P90...we used a FilterTron pickup surround as the size template, ans just measured everything else REALLY carefully!

Well, it was ALMOST done, but here's the actual "final touch"...a vintage Gretsch Bigsby B5 vibrato! I was originally saving it for another Tele project that I was going to work on, but I've rearranged some ideas, and so here it is, where it truly belongs:

I've got to say, I think that the vintage B5s appear to have a much smoother trem action than their modern counterparts. Anyway, I think the HiLoCaster is FINALLY done!

That's really great Eric, love it! That's the kind of "nerdy" touch (and I really mean that as a compliment!!) I can really appreciate, seriously.

Hey Chorks, nice job man! Looks awesome!
How much do the custom control plates cost? I've got a project of my own I've been working on, and those just look damn spiffy.
