Hey guys, I am looking to build a hollow body thinline tele with an f-hole. The problem is that I dont own one and none of my plans or templates have an f-hole on them. Is there a way that wsomeone can maybe try and trace an f-hole from a thinline along with an outline of the body. It would be nice to have actual scale as I would like to make a template from it. Or does anyone have this that they could post or email? Thanks in advance and I promise to post pictures and progress once I get started.

Hi Wad, and welcome to TM
I have a digital file in PDF-format of a 69 Fender Thinline F-hole in 1:1 scale including the body trace. I will email it to you.

The trick in making it is actually simple and I'll explane it because you can use it for ther purposes - like what I'am doing right now -
making a pickguard for my Thinline

You need a drawing programme with an acurate scaling option - I use Adobe Illustrator -
On the Fender Support Website all sorts of diagrams are available in PDF-format.
There is a list with 4 coloms - you need the first colom: Parts Layout Diag. - these are the drawings of complete guitars
They are downscaled to letter sized drawings and are very precize. So what you need to do is to blow them up again to real size.
Because the drawing is in PDF-format it is in vector format too and will not looze any detail when you scale up.
What I did was:
- download the Parts Layout Diag. of a 69 Fender Thinline
- open the Parts Layout Diag. in Illustrator
- Then delete the neck lines so I just have the body on my screen.
- open the scale option and select the complete body incl. f-hole.
- fill in the scale size to 324 mm body width , the height scale locked to size automatic. (height will scale in proportion of width)

And there you go - a complete Tele body in scale 1:1 with the right sized F-hole including a traceable body contour.

Maurits, thank you very much for this!

I was hoping to redraw it anyhow so that I could modify it in illustrator, so your advise is twice as helpfull.

Thanks again!

Well, here is my first update, thanks to Natsteel, I created a template/router pattern. I also got together some materials for the body. I am in Canada so maple is reasonably aboundant and pretty cheap, as you might notice the prelaminated and thickness sanded peice on the right of the picture was only $22.95 C$. Anyhow thats what I plan to use as material for the centre of the body and the 2 peices of laminated birdseye that I recycled will be the top and bottom. The thick 2 piece maple Lam in the middle is for another body that I am planning, Tele Deluxe with only 1 Seth Lover style fender pickup, but that will be another thread.

The idea here is to buld a thinline body, perform cut outs for the f-holes and pots, I plan to only use one pickup and no pickgaurd as I plan to do a blue tinted sunburst with white .6 inch binding on the top and bottom to somewhat hide the transistion between the birdseye top and botttom and the sugar maple centre.

In this same vein I next want to do a Fender starcaster, so a template pattern for that would rule, but alas Fender does not offer the pdf on their site., oh well, its fun to wing it too.

Next time I post I will have the body circumference routed and the bottom maple peice glued on, and hopefully that birdseye top with the f-hole cut outs.

Thanks again averyone for all your help!

Hey wad -- If you come across a Starcaster drawing or template, LET ME KNOW! I will do the same for you ...

Another update.

I have completed the main route of the body including the cavities, both top and bottom, including control cavity(centre of pic) and laminated and thickness sanded the back to the body. Next is to do some more sanding on the sides of the body and use my scroll saw to cut the 2 f-holes in the top(Right of the pic), then laminate it on and sand the sides some more. The white top looking peice in the left of the picture with the 2 f-holes is my router template, but I think the f-holes would be best cut with the scroll saw.

I have ordered binding from Stew mac and have picked up some nitrocellulous Laquer for it but I am not sure how to finish the body. The top is Birdseye maple, really figured and I want to highlight this, I also want to somewhat hide the fact that the top is a 4 piece laminated together. So I am thinking a light stain and a 2 colour sunburst.

Can someone give me an idea of how to tint my nitrocellulous or even what stains are compatible with Deft Nitrocellulose Laquer. I would like to try and make the sides a black with a transition to the blue stain ont he top and back, whilst using the white .6" plastic binding from Stew Mac. PS I am in Canada, so shipping from Guitar re ranch is out of the question due to chemical nature of finishes. So how do I get the materials for my finish? An automotive paint supplier? Any ideas?

Did you finish the telecaster thinline. If so it would be cool to post a picture. The info you got on routing the f hole was very helpful. I bet you found out that alittle tint goes a long way. Always easy to add more but easy to make to dark. Also I found that tint dries darker than mixture. My thinline is actually a chambered rosewood tele like harrisons that I chambered to lighten. I made several and this one I want to add an f hole. I doubt that it will change the sound but will look cool.
