Howdy gang,Newbie here. My current project guitar is a black partscaster with a 72? neck. The body is pretty bad sounding and pretty thin (less than 1 3/4) so I'm gonna practice routing it out and then put a new top on fromStewart MacDonaldI have been thinking of swapping out the body later for a (uh- some of you might not want to read this) a Srat body a routed for Tele hardware, etc. Has anyone seen this done or have a link??Fender is doing something similar now, only I want it backwards... uh, and cheaper.Custom Shop Limited EditionCloset Classic Tele?Strat?Hybrid LTD(Builder Select - Masterbuilt by Chris Flemming)I'm thinking more like THISStraTele PrototypesThe second from the left.

i saw that strat-tele hybrid on the fender site. i guess chris flemming is making only 100 of them. so i decide to make my own from scratch. i haven't decided on the finish yet. i am thinking some kind of translucent nitro over the swamp ash.

here i hogged out a bunch of wood prior to routing...

here is a view from the front after routing...

here is a side view after routing. you can see the belly and forearm contours...

i still gotta make the neck. it will be a strat style neck. i ordered gold hardware for it, however, i haven't decided on the pickups yet. actually, this wasn't really a planned build (i have about 4 other builds going on right right now, whew!). i saw that chris flemming tele on the fender site and at the spur of the moment i decided there needed to be 101 built!

btw, i like the look of the strat with the tele neck and pup/pickguard configuration. i may have to build one of those too!

Man that is sweeeet! That routing is cleaner than my Fender stuff, dang.

A buddy of mine is building up his garage/shop with some woodworking tools but niether of us have any experience. I'm a little worried about trying to get the neck pocket right and would hate to blow a nice piece of wood. I emailed Warmoth and this is what they had to say:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Arthur,

We can do some of what you're asking for, but not all of it. We can
make a rear routed Strat body with the tele pickup routs, and a standard
tele bridge rout. We can even do the 7/8" side jack hole so you can
install a standard tele style electrosocket. The only thing we can not
do is do the tele top rout control cavity on a Strat body. We can
always leave the knob and switch holes undrilled and you can find a
local tech to do the rout for your standard Tele control plate, if
that's the look you're looking for. And of course, since this is a rear
routed body, a pickguard will not be necessary. In fact, I don't think
that a tele pickguard will fit a Strat body properly.

As far as pricing goes, you would start with the normal rear routed
swamp ash Strat body price of $190.00. The Tele routs would add another
$45, so you'd be starting at $235.00 before painting. Also, due to the
very custom nature of this body, our normal 10 day return policy would
be completely null and void.

All in all, this sounds like it would be a very cool project, so if you
go with it, once you get it all put together, please email some pics to
our Webmaster so we can get it up on the Player's Gallery!

Best regards,

Aaron Stultz
Warmoth Guitar Products, Inc.

Rear routed for $235 and no controll cavity? geeesh

There's a guy named John Grey that used to live here in Champaign County, IL that I have called and he said he would build the body for me. I need to call him back and see if he's on it...

How many guitars have you built? Was your first one a player or did it take several attempts to buld a good one??

Oh yeah, do you do this for fun or are you for hire???

69thinline,

warmoth makes great stuff, however, since they are set up to use cnc machines, they aren't able to go too far off their standard bodies and routing.

i have built a few guitars and, luckily, my first turned out a player. while it is mostly a hobby to build guitars for myself, i no longer have any guitars that i have built because people have asked to buy them so i let them go thinking that i can always build more. i currently have 5 projects going on right now. i am hoping to keep 4 of them. 2 of the five have been sprayed (i used nitrocellulose lacquer) and are curing (30 days - i sometimes wait 45 days). i am spraying clear coats on one right now. then, i need to grain fill the one in my previous reply. for the 5th project, a good friend of mine has a danelectro electric solid body 12 string. we removed the neck and i am making a body for it.

as far as a rear route that also includes a tele top cavity route, i have such a route (rear and top combination) in a current project (see below). i wanted to use a tele control plate, however, i also wanted the room for a future mod to put in a piezo bridge with it's associated circuit board and extra knob/switch. it is a tele with a mahogany body and a spalted maple top.

here is a picture of the mahogany after band sawing the rough shape...

here is a picture of the spalted maple top after gluing the bookmatched halves...

this is a picture after gluing the top and routing the top routes and neck pocket..

here is the part where i rear routed the body and it meets the top route...

here i aligned the neck and test fitted the parts. this is before spraying clear coats...

here is the first clear coat going on (front view)...

first clear coat (back view)...

i still have to shoot several more coats, then after curing, wet sand and buff.

thanks old tele man (hmm... old, i'm old too)!

69thinline,
i would take a picture of my "shop", but currently i build in my patio! actually, in hawaii it kinda nice being able to build outdoors. i would like to build a shop at some point... got it on my todo list :-)

as far as tools...

bandsaw 14" (finally replaced my 9" bandsaw!)
plunge router 3-1/4hp
table router 2hp
jointer
hand held belt sander
table top belt sander
13" dewalt planer
drill press
jig saw
fret press
dremel with stewmac router attachment
compressor
hvlp spray gun
airbrush
other assorted hand tools, etc.

of course, i have other things on my wish list.

if you want to build from scratch i would say a that a small bandsaw (i started with a 9" band saw) and a router would be minimum followed by a drill press (gotta drill straight holes especially for the string thru ferrules). of course, the more tools you have the easier it will be. just remember... maintain a good centerline!

oh, and btw, necks are not that hard to make. i was scared to try at first, but i found that they are fairly easy to build. it also brings the satisfaction of building the entire guitar. although, i also think it is cool to just build the body for store bought necks too. i am currently building a telebody for dano 12 string neck. after i am done i will post pics.

anyway, if you wanna see some neck building process pictures, click here

Hi folks,

This is my first post (I'm a newbie to this forum).  I made a Tele-strat hybrid also.  It has a Tele body and a strat neck (both Mexi-made).  the neck has a rosewood fingerboard.  The one MOD I like the best is the following:

5-position selector switch wired so the two "in-between" positions give just a little bit of the pickup furthest away.

That is, the "in-between" position close to the bridge gives just a little of the neck pickup (sweetens it some), and the opposite gives just a little of the bridge pickup (brightens it some).  I also installed one of those concentric-shaft, dual pots so each pickup has it's own separate tone control.  The switching trick is accomplished using two 51K ohm metalfilm resistors.  Solder one to the bridge pickup, with the other end connected to the neck-side "in-between" position.   Mirror that for the bridge-side "in-between" position.

My Tele-Strat is equipped with the Seymour Duncan Classic stack Tele pickups.  They look and sound like the originals (better, actually) but they're humbucking.

Thanks for letting me spew out all my banal-blather about my Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Tele!

sounds interesting bucky! i like your wiring mod, i will have to look into that.

i when i finish up my spalted tele and the stratentele, i will have to do something with the electronics. i just love the tele look. i normally build carve tops and tele style axes. the carve tops are more classy looking, but the tele is just a down to earth working-man's design. however, i don't care for the "fender" sound (ok, please no flaming - its just my personal preference). so i want to do something to make my next set of teles more mid-rangey. i have used lace pups before. it was ok, however, i think i would like to try single coil sized humbuckers. i will also have to build teles to accept standard sized humbuckers too (actually, i have one humbucker tele built - need more!). i like butnut's tele (telegib)... check it out in the profiles under brian mikami.

have fun on the site. i enjoy it!

Thanks bro...I dig your 'new' name too! LOL...MAN! That Spalted top Tele is lookin' NUTS! Great job...kudos on building it yourself. Speaking of my Tele-Gib,I've enjoyed it immensely, in fact it's the guitar I play the most. Starting up a new band, and the relic look, although very kool, is passe, in my books. SO, I'm talking with Tommy (USA)about building a 'nice' body for me. It will have a single top binding, LES PAUL Gold Top finish. Routed for the dub-hums and LP toggle. All the parts will just swap over...Strat neck pocket too for my JV neck. I may go creme pickguard and probably have to chrome plate all my 'rusted' parts...to match the fresh new look. Good to see mods going strong, I've been out of it a spell, still have momutts Tele to spray (soon Jack!...no soccer for a few weeks...LOL)

i assume the new body will be a tele shape. with your specs, it should look hot! i had to put the hybrid and spalted tele on hold as i am in the middle of a build for a buddy of mine. he had a 12 string electric solid body dano. we pulled the neck off and i am building a tele body for it. it is alder with dub hums. almost done.

y, i know what you mean!  i stuggled with it because i have only made rear routed teles.  i kinda wanted a more traditional tele (front route w/pick guard), so i thought i would build one with an outrageous top.  anyway, my solution will be to build another spalted maple top tele that is rear routed.  that is what is kinda cool about building from scratch... you can just make another one!
