There's a lot of talk in the Strat world about where to setpickup height for certain types--i.e., people seem to like Texas Special's real low on the guard. How about with Telecasters? For instance, the blue Tele in my avatar has VNs in it which I enjoy quite a bit for that particular guitar. When I added the middle VN and put in the new pickguard, I lowered the Neck & Bridge and found I liked it. However, out of the blue today I experimented with raising them up again, and I found the neck especially just roared to life. I hadn't realized what I'd been missing, tonally, until that moment.Obviously you don't want to go too high to avoid magnetic pull, etc., but aside from that, how do you all feel about it?

I'm not a low-to-the-guard kinda guy. I usually set the pups fairly high, but without having the strings hit them. I don't use an overdrive pedal or any o' them fancy channel switching amps, so I need to hit the front end of that ol' Fender pretty hard. YMMV

Yeah Tele295, I agree.  I think I'm finding it especially so on noiseless pups, but I don't know why that would be.  On my standard-pup guitars, I seem to have more wiggle room, but on the noiseless-pup guitars, I need to leave 'em pretty high for the fullest tone.

I keep my Duncan 'buckers just a hair under the strings...well, the poles. Mr Duncan said on the JB pup, he unscrewed the screw-poles just so the bottom of the screw heads (flat) sit flush with the top of the bobbin...I did that and it opened up the beast. He did'nt say (this was from the Tele-Gib story) all humbuckers have to do this...but it worked for me, did it to the Jazz neck pup too...sure don't sound like a Tele anymore, just a wolf in sheeps clothes baaa-ramm -euuu.
Someone on TFF posted a site on how to setup the Strat pups for max quack...I did that and it works. I like the clean sounds of the Strat, you know it's a Strat. I have no idea what Goldie is gonna sound like...Lil59 and Charlie Christian neck...why do I think I'll be knocked out?

When I got my new Tele, the PUs were very low compared to how I set humbuckers, for instance.  I immediately raised them up to where they were close to the strings when fretted at the 21st fret, and they sounded NOT RIGHT.  I read some posts on different forums, and found that people said lowering the PUs sweetened the tone and increased sustain.  Sure enough, it worked for me.  Go figure.  I love Teles (after being a humbucker guy since 1973), but it's almost like learning to play another instrument.

All the pros play w/medium to high action and low(as low as they can use )pickup height. Two things are gained when pups are close to strings, volume and brightness thats all. Gone are the character, sustain, warmth, and subtleties of a good pup.W/single coils magnetic pull is a big deal as it can effect intonation and cause fret buzz.
