OK, its time, once more for my stupid newbie question of the week.Correct me if I am wrong here, but... When a dog/bitch is chosen as a reseve winner, that means, 'Missed it by Thaaaaaaaaaat much', right? no points, no glory?Second question:I witnessed a show, some time ago, where in BoB, the winner was a 'special' dog, and the second place was my friends bitch.He complained that when the judge picked the CH, that he could have "passed the points" to his bitch; who only needs a major to finish up.Now I know that a judge can do almost anything they want to do in the ring, up to and including awarding no points to ANY animal.. but.. what does passing the points mean? I really am confused about that.Color me Curious./ Al

Not a stupid question. In fact, I think it's a very good question (re: reserve) because I've advocated all my years showing that reserve should at least get HALF A POINT!!! Especially at shows where there is a huge entry. It might not make sense at the smaller shows. But to go to Montgomery or GW and get reserve over 60-70 other dogs of the same sex is heartbreaking!!! I know because it happened to my bitch, Riva, at GW two years ago!! We accepted the "glory" from it any way!! It's kinda the same for Awards of Merit - -
As for the other part of your question - There is no "second place" in BOB judging but I expect you mean Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed. Normally there are 3 "winners" at the end of the judging - BOB, BOS, and Best of Winners, which is the dog judged to be the best between Winners Dog and Winners Bitch. Technically, either of these can also win BOB or BOS - and it happens.
I don't know what the situation was there, as there are some interesting, complex things that can come up. But, usually the terminology is "spread the points around" (at least here in CA) or "share the points". I've never heard "pass the points".
Some judges are very reluctant to put a class dog up for BOB unless it is exceptional and better quality than the specials - or, maybe there are no specials.
You are also correct about a judge being able to award no ribbons. I've seen it done once (not in MS but a toy breed) and I've seen it done in Terrier Group once. I don't think that happens frequently.

So... sharing the points.. spreading the points around... I could easily have misunderstood, or misheard.. Im old and my hearing aint what it used to be. Ask my wife, she will tell you it never WAS what it used to be, but thats just HER opinion.
Either way.. the phrase puzzled me as to its meaning in the situation.
and yes.. maybe it was a BOS and Best of Winners ring, and the other dog was already a CH.
now maybe I am confusing myself.. *sigh*
We are really working hard to get Jennie finished.. she got a Reserve at Raleigh on day one, but its tough competition... 30+ dogs.

Ya, Reserve usually means "lost by a hair", although I once was notified after the fact that my RWD ended up being WD because the winning dog was not registered correctly or something.
