I have a question which might seem silly, but I'm a fairly new Schnauzer owner. My boy was born in May and I enrolled him in puppy head start at Petsmart back in late August. While he does some of the stuff we taught him, he refuses to do the laydown and stay at the door commands unless I have a treat in my hand (and that doesn't work for the stay at the door command!). I was wondering if this is a Schnauzer thing or is he just stubborn? I would like to get him into obedience competition ( I don't have a clue about conformation) but now I'm just not sure.Thanksshawn
First of all, your puppy is still pretty much a baby, with a short attention span. Second, you have only been working with him for about eight weeks.... it takes five weeks for a dog to put things from short-term into long-term memory. Third, if he is a more dominant dog, lying down, particularly in front of other dogs, will be extremely difficult for him to do. Just keep working with him every day, preferably in two or more SHORT sessions.
You certainly will be able to get him into obedience competition, but it will take several months of hard work to get him ready for competing. I would also try looking for a training club that specializes in training dogs for competition. Many places, like PetsMart, just try to make people's pets more sociable and easier to live with, and don't teach the finer points needed for showing, such as proper footwork.

Thanks for the info Karen. I think there is an Obedience Club here in el paso, so I will see what I can find out. I really enjoy training with Charles and would LOVE to compete. I can tell there is a lot going on in his little head (some of it mischievious!) and I want to harness that and put it to good work.

This may be of some help: Search for Clubs and Schools
The only difficulty in training a schnauzer is trying to be smarter than it is! If you can find anyone who teaches clicker classes, you may find that works well with your dog. We click our tongues on the roofs of our mouths here instead of using one of those little plastic clickers.
