Well, my unpredictable little black "devil dog" Gypsy did her best to embarrass me last Sat. at her third time inOpen Acompetition. I had to double-call her on almost every exercise, and then she left the ring on the long sit!!!Now she has done ALL of her exercises perfectly in class, here at home, and almost all perfectly at another park where I take her to practice. But could she do it at the trial??????????????? NO!Out of the three trials I've entered her in Open A, only the very first one saw her actually do any good - she did not qualify but did the exercises without double calls, etc.Anybody have this same trouble? Is it just that she needs more experience out? Does the experience in Novice not carry over into the ring???????????????????????????/Tania

Once you are seriously competing, the dog should be trained in several different locations every week. This, however, sounds more like a stress problem. Something has totally turned the dog off of working. This problem is most likely something you have done or are doing.

Some of my dogs cannot handle physical corrections, and I used to train them so much harder (and firmer) just before trials. It took me a long time to realize why they performed so much worse at the shows. It was simply my heavy hand overdoing things in my desire for "perfection" that I knew was there just waiting to come out. I had to learn to do all my corrections verbally and to rely heavily on motivation (positive reinforcement).

Find out what motivates your dog the most, and make her enjoy working again. Break all the exercises into their various components and work each of those separately. Complete exercises should be reserved for the show ring.

Pedigree indicates what the animal should be.
Conformation indicates what the animal appears to be.
But performance indicates what the animal actually is.
