I'm interested in getting Elsa into a new activity, and I've always found flyball interesting.  I'm not certain of Elsa's current training, she's been through puppy school, and I've taken on most of her obedience training successfully, but alone.  She's now two, so where should I start?  Do I collect confidence in completing further obedience training before focusing on beginning classes in flyball, or should I start her in those classes immediately?  Any comments will be welcome.  She does have a reliable recall, although it's not very well tested with distractions.  She walks on heel pretty well, and long down-stays are great.

I did scent-hurdling briefly with Sunny a million years ago; it was the precursor to flyball, and was a slightly milder sport. Flyball is NOT something I would recommend for schnauzers, although some do it. It cranks them up too much, they seem to lose all sense of reason, barking uncontrollably, and often getting too nippy.... depending on the individual.

I would recommend agility instead, as that requires more brainwork on the part of the dog, and the dog and handler work as a team. The dogs LOVE it!

Well, if there's one thing Elsa does have is excellent bite inhibition, and I wouldn't want that to change.  And she's naturally a quiet gal, and I wouldn't want to change that too.  I'm certainly not opposed to agility, though in my mind flyball looks like much more fun.  However, ultimately I want to improve my communication with her, and I have to agree that agility is probably the better route in that aspect.  I'm sure much has been said in this forum about beginning agility, so I'll take a browse around before asking more questions.

Now that my agility-crazed daughter Katie is on this Forum, agility questions can be directed to her. She actually helps train an agility foundation class.

If you go to Terra's webpage, there is a video on there of one of their NADAC tunnelers runs that shows BOTH the dog and Katie having a great time! I don't think the handlers have nearly as much fun in flyball<G>
