Quick Question. My new rescue girl (6 months) is very skinny. She was jsut treated for hookworms and spayed last week. What can i feed her besides hard food that will make her put on some weight? She is being fed 2 times a day.
Hi there -
Hmm, I would make some suggestions for canned food, but with the big recall, right now is not a good time to start exploring that.
I would suggest a couple of things....remembering that any new foods must be introduced tiny amounts at a time, building up over a period of weeks to avoid making the dog sick.
Dick van Patten's Natural Balance Roll (looks like a roll of bologna) is good.
You could boil or broil some pieces of chicken or beef (no oils or any spices or seasonings at all) and add those to her food.
A dab (start with less than 1/2 teaspoon) of cottage cheese several times a week would help. Yogurt - same.
Scrambled eggs - again no oil or seasonings.
Bananas, apple, melon...
But not all of these at the same time. She is probably still going through the adjustment with you - and that's stressful, so pick one or two of the above and go with them for a few weeks, then add another one.
Don't ever free feed (just leave food down for her all the time). This actually does one of two things - it makes a fat dog or it encourages dogs to be picky eaters or not eat at all.
Hope this helps.

If you need to put weight on a dog, just feed its daily ration of kibble (you can increase this a bit), and then give it "dessert" afterwards.... a slice of bread. Most dogs love to eat bread, and there are 70 calories in each slice.
However, since your girl is only 6 months old, I would just increase her kibble. My offspring at that age are usually getting two cups of food a day, but they are very active here.

Pedigree indicates what the animal should be.
Conformation indicates what the animal appears to be.
But performance indicates what the animal actually is.

However, if there are any allergies involved, remember that WHEAT & CORN are two of the biggest problems for dogs, so bread might not work. Also, I've seen a lot of bread that contains either BHA or BHT - - used as a preservative.
My choice would be to add calories with real food. They get enough of the dry stuff already. JMO.
