I'm a little confused.  Our mini is a 7 month old male.  During one of our recent vet visits, we asked about neutering (when, how much, etc.) and our vet said and I quote, "You're not going to neuter him are you?  He is the most nonaggressive dog I've seen".  Everything we've read said if we are not going to breed (which we are not), we should do this.  I'm wondering why the vet would say it and if their is some validity to it?  He confused us on this one.......What do you think?

Neutering a dog that you are not going to breed is the best thing for him healthwise. From what I know, unneutered Males can have issues later in life healthwise that have nothing related to aggression. As far as the vet's comment, I would have been confused as well. Please get another opinion as I have never heard that one before.

My male wasn't that aggressive and I don't think neutering him has changed him all that much. I am just glad that I did it as I know the benefits far outway any risks.

That is confusing. And unusual as many vets would encourage neutering if you're not going to breed.

As for the aggression argument, I'm suspicious of that. I've seen very aggressive neutered males before and some pretty passive intact ones.

My only thing, and I know it's a personal decision for you so please don't get me wrong, is that if you are NOT going to neuter your dog, you MUST not EVER allow him any opportunity to 'roam' or otherwise get away from you. Also, if he is around females in heat, don't let them play together unless you absolutely are within reach to keep them apart from any doggy 'unions'.

Just two comments:  1) Maybe he didn't mean it exactly as it sounded....tho I have difficulty reading anything else much into it other than he thinks (for some reason) that males become more aggressive after they are neutered.

2) As in any profession, not every individual graduated at the top of his or her class.......If he seems to be uninformed on anything else I would just go find another vet.  Your vet needs to be like your right arm - - an indispensible item that really could mean the difference between life and death (of your dog).  So if you don't fully trust your vet, you are putting your dog in danger.

You could just out and out ask him what he meant by that and tell him he confused you.  Hey, these people went to years and years of schooling to become knowledgeable about their subjects - make them tell you what they learned....!   And if they didn't learn it - - say bye bye.

Hmmm it sounded to me like the vet was saying..."he's the most non-aggressive dog i've ever seen.." meaning....why would you neuter a non-aggressive dog b/c he doesn't NEED to be calmed down...i.e Once neutered, aggressive dogs or those who are beginning to show a little more aggression usually calm down..so the vet seems to be saying that's not the case with this dog,. he doesn't need to be calmed down, so why neuter him at all?

However there are lots of other reasons for neutering a dog...this is certainly not the only one or the most important one.

Yea, I agree that's what he meant.  Its just that now my husband is thinking he doesn't need to be neutered, so we're gathering the facts...........  I was suprised he didn't advocate for it.
