I have a male schnauzer who is 10 years old and who is constantly licking and chewing his front paws like Lolipops and making slurping noises,he used to have dryskin on his butt a few years ago and used to chew on it but that thankfully has stopped, my wife has had 3 other schnauzers that have all had skin problems of one type of another. We are thinking about adopting another schnauzer and i am wondering wether anybody out there has a mini devoid of these problems, i love the breed and have contemplated adopting a Standard Schnauzer as they supposedly do not suffer with this ailment due to a harsher coat although i prefer the smaller sized Mini. Thanks for your input in Advance

I took care of a Giant for almost a year and loved him! He was the reason my daughter bought Ditto for me, figuring that a Mini would be easier for me to handle.  I see the same crazy characteristics in Ditto that my Giant had. He was a great guard, as well as a watch, dog. He weighed about 80 pounds and was not a dog that you'd want to mess with. But he was always gentle and kind after I told him it was okay.

Blue seems to do this when her paws are dry or cracked (I use something called Musher's Secret to rub in) or if there's even a tiny little mat between her toes (I just carefully snip these out). She also showed symptoms of having an allergy last summer, licking not only her paws but her lower forelegs, so it could have been the grass. In any case, I scrutinize her feet very often.

I've also heard dogs will do this out of boredom, like a nervous tick.
