I'm not very fond of long eye brows in Mini Schnauzers. I don't understand why have it so arrow looking & long? They can't see very well when it's long! Misty loves her brows short like in my avatar. It doesn't make sense to me!Jennifer

Jennifer,

Actually I think we only assume they can't see with long eyebrows.  I think they can see fine.  There are a number of other breeds who have much more hair in their eyes and that is the way they have always "done their jobs..."  Remember, most terriers in original home countries of origin (Germany being the schnauzer's origin) were "employed" by farmers to control and rid the farms and barns of vermin and predators.  So, there were specific reasons for their grooming.  I have read that stripping the coat to achieve the eventual hard coat actually began long long ago as a form of body protection against the teeth of rats and other rodents the dogs were expected to attack, kill, and carry away.  The ear flaps also provided the same kind of protection for delicate internal ear parts.

Most of us have never seen a raccoon or rat or porcupine fight when trapped - but I understand that they can and do - and can really do some harm to a dog if provoked.

Although I don't know it for a fact, I can surmise that longer eyebrows also somewhat may have been thought to protect the eyes.  However, I cannot say how long our dogs' ancestors eyebrows were actually kept.

Of course now it's the grooming style.  AKC says that we are to keep our dogs as close as possible to their original purposes in look and intent, so the standards of most breeds are formulated in that manner.

Like anything, fads come and go.  There are personal preferences in the groomers for shows.  Some eyebrows are heavier and have more substance.  Others are thin and wispy.  But all are long.  You could not enter a dog in the U.S. that had had its eyebrows cut short and expect to have a judge seriously consider it for any kind of placement or win.

As the owner of a schnauzer, of course the grooming is your choice.  However, to maintain the breed as a "schnauzer" - longer eyebrows ARE part of the appearance of a CORRECTLY groomed MS - and those who choose to do otherwise do not represent the breed in its true form.

Professional groomers who leave the very long skirts (that make them look like cockers) and shave the snout and cut eyebrows wrong are simply poorly educated about the breed itself.  It's the owner's responsibility to be sure that the groomer is informed of the correct grooming method - if the owner wants a correct schnauzer. (And there are many who don't care, of course.)

Karen may have better reasoning than I on the "why" the eyebrows are left long, but that's my best explanation.

Tania

Tania,

Thank you for getting me to understand on the "Why". I think you made it very clear, I'm pretty much a newbie. I recently started grooming Misty myself since last summer. I think I mention in my past post on why her hair grows very slowly then most of other Mini Schnauzers. Theirs will grow 3x faster then Misty's...  I do like the eye brows in your Schnauzer in your avatar. I see you don't have her/his long either.

But Misty is not train like what her ancestors or/and she's not being showed. So what's the point? Although I'm still learning how to do the proper cut, sometimes I screw up on the cut, then it appears to be shorter then it looks etc

Misty's hair grows fully in 8 months, then yours probably need to be groomed in 4 to 8 wks.
Thanks again! I can't wait to read what Karen has to say as well.

I would also add that the longer eyebrows offer more protection for dogs who like to forage about in the undergrowth!

Of course these dogs with long eyebrows can see, they are cut short on the corner of the eye so that from the front you can see the dogs eyes. One of my giants has her eyebrows touching the end of her nose and she can still see well enough to do agility!

I guess for me the point is that I take pride in my Mini Schnauzers.  I want people to recognize them as their correct breed, and to know that they are correctly groomed....or at least that I try to correctly groom them.  (Obviously we do make occasional grooming mistakes.  My dogs are not always good on the table when I'm grooming.   I'm stricter on my show dogs but my retired show dogs and my pet dogs get the breaks.)  To me, having a poodle that resembles a mop (let's just say) does a disservice to the poodle breed.  Why buy a poodle (or a schnauzer) and THEN not groom it as it is supposed to be?  You could go get a dog at the shelter for next to nothing if you want a breed-less dog that can be groomed as nothing.

By the way - the particular avatar I'm using right now is not a good example of eyebrows.  That is an artistic version of a photo I took of one of my younger dogs I sold to some local friends - and he was not groomed properly by his groomer.  So I tried to "fix" the photo a little and did not do a very good job.  I didn't intend it to be an example of grooming - only a cute Christmas greeting.

Well maybe someday when Misty's hair is bit longer I'll do the correct cut! But she has thin & fine hair, so it may not work. It won't hurt to try. Misty is too a pain in the *** on the grooming table. But she's doing much better thou. She just need to get used to me etc etc

Anyways, I do have PRIDE of Miniature Schnauzers! So don't get me wrong or put words in my mouth. Why did you get rid of your Mini Schnauzer? Then complain how the owner did a horrible job. You should be thankfully he has a good home! Color, Appearances, Sizes, the proper groom should not even matter. IT's the care, & the love for a belove pet should matter, most importantly time & money should matter!

I have to agree with Moonstr80

it is the care and love we give our pets that is the utmost importance. and we should NOT be jugded by ANYONE telling us we don't take pride in our dogs just becuz we don't cut our dogs in the exact manner as the showers do or breeders do. not everyone is perfect. like moonstr80 i also don't like the long brows and do keep them a bit shorter. but it does not make me a bad mommy or that i DON"T take pride in my mini because I DO.

Her health comes first. I should be thankfully she's healthy & alive not b/c she MUST have a certain hair cut. Misty is who she is. I love her, she's my baby! Not some kind of barbie doll being work up for an fashion show.

Misty is not a show ring dog. She's a family pet, not some kind of product

OK ladies ~  back up a bit.  Jennifer you asked a question and I only gave you my opinion.  I did not say you were wrong - in fact, earlier in this thread I said obviously as her owner the choice was up to you.

I just look at it differently.  I am a (sometimes) breeder and I also show my dogs.  I'd be a laughing stock if I didn't try to make them look right.  Don't get me wrong - my grooming is far from perfect.  But there IS a pattern and I DO try to make them look right.

As for the puppy you refer to that I "got rid of" - I didn't get rid of him - I sold him to some very good friends.  Hello - I'm a breeder.  And no, I have spoken with his owners several times about the incorrect grooming done by their groomer (NOT THEIR OWNER) - who is ALSO a friend of mine.  I sent his owners to her.  I did not use the word "horrible" - YOU said that.

You are quite welcome to groom you MS any way you wish.  Both of you.  This forum is to answer questions and give you experienced opinions.  That's what you get.  If it doesn't make you happy then I'm sorry but I suggest you both go elsewhere.  I don't allow this forum to get out of hand in this manner.

'Nuff said.

Tania,

I didn't realize how this was gonna be out of hand. I'm very sorry, I don't know you that well Tania, I respect what you are doing, I truly do. I have thank you for answering & making things more clear for me. As well. I don't mind the correct groom. But you're right their are some very bad groomers that need to be told that they're doing a incorrect job.

I hope we can settle this. I don't want you to be angry with me Tania.

Not angry but I don't appreciate my words being mis-read and twisted into an argument.

Now - end of this thread.
