I've decided to give clippering a try on Nitro. I couldn't find my old ones, so got a new set. My problem is I am getting very aggravated trying to 'finesse' the technique. I watched the DVD but it didn't really help. My question is how do you hold the clippers in relation to the body? Do they rest on the coat, against the body as you go through or what? I'm trying to just go with the coat right now, because I'm a little bumbly with them. My problem is that when I use one of the adaptor combs, the clippers don't cut the hair. I do not think it's the clippers, but me, because without one on, it will take hair away. I really don't want to cut him down real short I just don't understand why it is as I pass the come through his hair they don't DO anything.Signed, confused in florida..lol

You shouldn't need any combs to cut the hair if you have the right shears. I use a #10 blade right one the skin and it leaves just enough hair to look great. The legs can be scissored if you leave them longer as I do and blend them into the shorter hair on top). There are many good brands out there, Conair makes a new one I hear is great (runs about 110.00) and the Oster A5 makes 2 different kinds with fast and slower speeds (run around 125.00-150.00).

Cheaper isn't better with shears, get the professional kind and you will see the different right away! Good luck!

p.s. If you want to leave the dog longer, than use a lower number blade like a 4 or 7.......

My question is how do you hold the clippers in relation to the body? Do they rest on the coat, against the body as you go through or what?

You hold the clippers parallel to the skin--do not press the teeth down towards the skin--pull the skin taught as you go to make your cut smoother.  I have not had luck with the comb attachments either.  You really need a Clipper Vac/Taxi Vac to make them work as intended.

Whether you are going with or against the growth, the clipper blades should be flat to the bit you are clipping.

Comb attachments are rubbish, you are better to use a bigger blade (lower number) and make sure you work on a clean and fluff dried coat - it will give a better finish. If you want to keep trying the comb attachments then you will need a fine blade like a 30#, larger blades tend to trap the hair rather then cut it when used with a comb.

A good finish tends to be down to the prep work you have done on the coat before the clippers come out.
