Re :   Question about track regionals.

Where on the WVSSAC site are you seeing that?  The last info I saw showed John Marshall or Wheeling Park.

Regardless, I would think that a two-heat final would be a requirement for a 6 lane track.  Anything else would shortchange the region.  I know that Tyler Consolidated used to host Regional Meets and they held two-heat finals, and that was prior to the advancement changes.

Topic :   Question about track regionals.

I was looking on the WVSSAC website and the region 1 A is being moved to John Marshall. I was wondering, since they only have 6 lanes, will there have to be a two heat final in sprints since the 7th best time could possibly advance.

Re :   Throwing Camp over the Summer

I will not be able to get this camp started this summer....due to lack of time to prepare myself for all that is needed. I am looking for a full time job while im working a full time job not to much free time on my hands. I will be trying to set up a little camp in the winter for the throws in the spring. If you have a very flexible schedule you could try contacting me throw my email address listed above and I could so some coaching that way.

Sorry I tried to get it done but just ran out of time.
Thanks for all the comments and I had alot of people contact me about the camp that is why im trying to get something due for the winter.

Re :   The Opening of the RunWV site

Regional alignments are always interesting and the logic dosen't seem to be with the ssac. Doddridge will be traveling approximately 2hrs with the new alignment as opposed to the 50-55 min. from before. Not to mention that all the travel was 4 lane. Unfortunatley I found out too late about the alignments to write an appeal so I just have to live with it and wish my appeal could have been ignored.

WVSSAC TRACK COACHES COMMITTEE MEETING - June 4, 2008
The WVSSAC T&F Coaches Committee met on Wed. June 4th.  Most notably the following items were addressed:

1. Use of Gloves in the PV - Will be submitted to National Federation next year for consideration

2. Changing Regional Format - Much discussion of 4 Super Region format with all three classes following State Meet format competing at one of the 4 sites.  Many positive and negatives discussed.  Committee felt the idea had merit, but not practical due to  potential expense increases.

3.  Out of Season Contact Period - Directed by Mr. Londeree to  submit the proposal through  school principal.  As a rule change it is not an item that can be voted on to be recommended by this committee.  I will resubmit it through my principal and would like to see those that agree with me to do the same.                      The proposal can be downloaded by clicking here.

4. Qualifying marks for Running Events - Discussed having qualifying meets during the season to qualify athletes in running events for the State Meet.  After much discussion, the committee decided to table the  issue until next meeting to gather more information about possible methods of implementation.

5. State Meet Problems - Mr. Messenger and Mr. Londeree stated that entrance will be allowed into the State Meet at 11:00am next year.  Packets will be available hopefully at a different location than this year.  That location is still to be determined.  Scratches will have to be completed between 11:00am and 1:00pm.  One other possibility also discussed was to let athletes in with their uniform until 1:00pm on Friday to alleviate overcrowding at the gate.  Qualifier lists will also be double checked by the State Meet Games Committee and it will be the responsibility of all coaches to check their qualifiers as well as the qualifiers from their Region for errors.

6. MS Hurdle Distances -  Committee voted to recommend changing MS  Hurdle Races as follows:

Boys 7 Hurdles @ 75m @ 36″        Boys Shuttles  5 Hurdles @ 60m @ 30″

Girls 7 Hurdles @ 75m @ 30″        Girls Shuttles  5 Hurdles @  60m @ 30″

Re :   WV State Meet Comparison

The enrollment figures are the ones used by the WVSSAC during the last classification cycle (2005).

The possibilities for evaluation  and analysis are endless.  If anyone would like to have the original spreadsheets to add to extend  my efforts, I will post the original spreadsheet files for download on the Comparison Page.  If someone does do something great with them I can post additional info with my stuff.

Re :   WV State Meet Comparison

Ooh...  I thought of another cool stat to run, combining the boys and girls and look at the effect of  uniting them.  To see if it's just a gender thing or if it is the school that is really dominant.

Sorry, I really like math too.

Re :   WV State Meet Comparison

This is really neat, by the way.

Which year did you take the enrollment from?  Did you just take it from this past school year?  I would like to see how enrollment has changed particular school's athletic performance.  You could really see how much of a correlation there is between enrollment and athletic "ability."

It is really cool to see the general trends:  the lower the division the more the points are "feeded" to more "dominant" schools and thus you have more schools that don't score in the state meet;  also with the lower divisions, you have an easier time  "scoring" more points per enrollment because your denominator is much lower as compared to  more populated schools, and school's points  can be compared yearly.

Another statistic that might be fun to analyze is the percentage of points earned by each team, each year, and over a four year span.  I mean you have a 558 point total for the state meet; so, 2232 total points for four years.  So let's take Winfield Girls for example [since I happen to be partial to them  Smile  ] for the year 2008 they scored 123 points out of 558, multiply that by a 100, giving  a percentage of  22.04% of the total points.  Let's take their 4 year total  of 456.5, divide that by 2232,  and multiply by 100% to  yield 20.45%.  It's a fun little estimate if you want to check the stats  of your school or analyze how you fair against the other schools in your class.

Re :   60' shot put

  Look up Nick Vena from
Morristown, N.J. His personal best throw in the shot is a 66' 3" and he
is only a freshman in high school. He is 14 years old and is around
6'3" and about 170 pounds.

Re :   Throwing Camp over the Summer

I think what you are trying to do with the throwing camp is great.
There are no decent throwing camps around here for athletes who are
serious about the throws to get involved in. If you guys need any help
with it at all just let me know. I just finished up my final throwing
year at Marshall and am hoping to start into the throws coaching area
in WV. So just email me at jetersgrl204@yahoo.com if you need any help
with it! Thanks and Good Luck!

Re :   WV State Meet Comparison

The comparison shows enrollment of all the WV schools, total points scored over the last 4 years, and a ratio of the total points scored versus the schools enrollment.  There is no one point to be made from the data.

You could use the total points scored to evaluate various programs consistency at the state meet for a four year span.  You could use the ratio to look at how small schools fair against larger schools in their division.  You could use the year by year totals to explore trends for a particular school or area.  You could compare regions to see where the strongest programs are located over a 4 year period.  As you stated, you could look at what percentage of schools fail to score in each division.

The information could be used to support or attack any number of proposals, points, arguments, etc.  I don't have any specific agenda or plan.  I just happen to like statistics.  I put this together last summer out of my own curiousity and thought others might be interested in the information.

Re :   WV State Meet Comparison

Just like to ask with this comparison, What kind of point are you getting at. If you would look at Single A boys that 31 of the 60 schools didnt score a point in 3 yrs. Thats alittle more than half the schools in A.
