Top ten WV female track athletes
The methodology for the lists is plainly explained on the pages. This isn’t some list that we sat down and said “gee, I think this athlete was better than this one.” This is a purely statistical analysis of their State Meet performances. The bottom line is that though Margaret may have been dominant in the early ‘80’s, girls track has come a long way since then. At this point, she doesn’t have one of the top 10 State Meet performances in the 1600 or the 3200. Her cross country exploits are irrelevant to this list as it is a Track & Field list based solely on State Meet Performances. Being named State Track Athlete of the Year is also irrelevant to this list. That is something that is voted on and is purely subjective. I prefer an objective method. That way there is no "fixing" of the rankings.
No doubt Margaret Blake was a tremendous athlete, but her times have not stood up to the test of time. The comparison among athletes for these lists isn’t relative to their competition. They’re relative to each other. A 5:04 mile is better than a 5:11 mile no matter what decade the 5:11 occurred.
Regarding your other comment regarding Steve Taylor in the e-mail (I tried to reply but it got rejected), he's # 1 in the A-AA list. To find A-AA runners, you have to look at the A-AA list. |
