Soldering iron - My Unger Race Station went when I sold my gear and wouldn't you know, they don't make it any more. I've been reading pretty good reviews of various Hakko irons so, to save a little money I'm thinking about the 455 or 456 using the 633-02 stand. Does this sound reasonable (ceramic, up to 1000degF, should be plenty of heat for what I would need it to do)?

Charger - I had a Team Orion DC, running off a small power supply. This time around I'd like to go AC/DC (the less gear I have the better). The name that seems to come up the most is the Hyperion EOS0606i. Seems to get good reviews and will charge whatever I have. Any others I should look at?

So far this is what I'm thinking

- Losi 22
- Tekin RS Pro (still need to pick what turn the motor should be...11.5 to start would be my guess)
- Futaba 4PL (still on the fence with this one, seems like a very nice radio and I've read nothing but great reviews, just not a fan of how big the receiver is)
- Batteries - planning on getting one of each LiPo, LiFe, NiMH and comparing how they run. Not sure if I'm ready  for the seriousness of LiPo charging/storage (if I burn the house down, the wife will be pissed)

I'm sure I'm forgetting something. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks,
Tom

Hakko soldering irons are great. Really anything over 60w should do the trick.

Never heard of that charger but I doubt there's anything wrong with it.

Futaba 4pl looks fine, might want to also check out the Airtronics M11.

Don't waste your money buying anything other than lipo, you will be dissapointed, and lipos are plenty safe as long as you're not an idiot.

The TLR 22 and Tekin Rs pro are both good. As far as a motor no one runs an 11.5. Depending on what you feel comfortable racing most of the mod guys run 7.5 or 8.5's. An 11.5 is going to feel similar to an old 19t brushed motor.

Definitely not worried about being an idiot, however, accidents can and do happen. Have you tried the LiFe batteries yet?

Still not used to the brushless vs. brushed as far as turns go. I ran mostly 10 - 12 turn single or double in both 4wd mod and 2wd mod. Very rarely did I run anything lower than a 10 turn.

Thanks for the input

I have never tried the LiFe batteries nor have I ever seen or heard of anyone using them. No one runs anything other than lipo anymore. You may see a few people still with NiMh's but no one runs LiFe batts.

An 8.5 brushless is the go to mod motor for everyone from club racers to the pros so that's what I would get if you were used to running mod back in the day.
