<below is the initial correspondence I had with Mike Hubert about your awesome track, he suggested I post something here, so rather than start over , I did a little cut and paste>

Good morning,

A little info about myself – I've been into RC cars since the mid 80’s and I started racing RC cars in 1991 and continued up until 1998 when I moved to Florida. Much to my dismay, the outdoor off road racing scene wasn’t nearly as big as I was expecting (at the time) and I ended up selling all of my gear (it didn’t help that my wife and I also had two babies during that time). Now that the kids are all but out of diapers and I actually have a little free time, I’ve been checking out 1/8 scale electric buggies for a little fun….however I was having a REALLY hard time justifying the expense for something to bash around the neighborhood with….until I found your website/track online. It was truly one of those ‘hallelujah!’ moments. That said, my plans are to be race ready by the early fall and I’d like a little info as to what people are running at your track. As of right now I’d absolutely love to run 1/8 scale electric buggy (when I quit racing I was running a XX-4 in 4wd mod, and before that a XX in 2wd mod and stock and XX-T in mod truck), however if no one else is running in that class I can easily switch to something else (my goal, now that I've found a track, is to race not just run around on some dirt). I’ve already downloaded ROAR’s 2010 rule ‘book’ so I can get up to speed with all the changes LiPos and brushless motors have brought to the table (amazing what can happen in thirteen years).

So assuming you have people running 1/8 scale electric buggy, can you give me some idea what they’re running as far as battery/motor combo? Also what chassis(s) are doing well and what chassis(s) seem to struggle.

What I’m looking at –

Chassis – RC8Be or Losi 8ight-e 2.0 (my only experience with 1/8 scale was a gas Ofna Pirate in 1991)

Radio – Futaba or Spektrum 2.4

Esc/motor – Tekin RX8 or Castle Creations Mamba Monster

Batteries – ? A LiPo of some sort

Totally open to suggestions.

Thanks, and I look forward to racing with you guys soon,

Tom

Ken will have to answer this one. They are very expensive. I think a 4-wheel short course is a better choice there is a lot more people racing them. Or even a 2-wheel drive short course. They are the biggest classes. Did you ever race at ORCCC before behind a-z pest control?

Yes, yes they are. What kind of turn out do you get for the 1/10 buggy classes? I've done the truck thing (Losi XX-4 conversion) and back in 97, it was way to much bashing for my taste (I broke more parts in the four weekends we raced truck than in an entire season of racing 4wd mod). Granted that could just be the people I was racing with at the time :) .

Nope, never raced in Florida. I'm an old school midwest/northeast racer...Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New York.

Being a Losi fan, I'm pretty impressed with the 22. Probably a smarter approach would be to start off in 2wd and wait for Losi to replace the XXX-4 then move back into 4wd. I know my wallet (and my wife) would like that much better.

I bought an SC18 for my five year old daughter so hopefully she can get up to speed enough by the fall to come race with dad.

1/10 scale buggy is usually one of the biggest and most competitive classes around here. I would say definately get the 22, you wont be disapointed.

4 wheel buggy is dead. Accept at some of the big races. The tracks have to be real smooth and they are high maintenance. 4 wheel short course is popular you can really hammer the throttle and they are durable. They also look more realistic.

I wouldn't say dead, more like dormant. This is almost the same situation the hobby was in when Losi introduced the XX-4.

I've always owned a 4wd buggy. My first was Schumacher Cat. I would pre-race prep it the same as all my other cars for a club race and occasionally we'd get enough people to run the class....then Losi came out with the XX-4 and everyone seemed to be jumping onboard the 4wd band wagon. We had enough people on a weekly basis running 4wd mod that I actually stopped racing 2wd buggy and truck and focused on 4wd. It was awesome. My fingers are crossed that Losi has something in the works that can jump start the class again (let’s face it, the XXX-4 is old and needs to be replaced)...maybe a '44' or '42'? Interestingly enough, when Losi offered their truck conversion for the XX-4 back in 97, there was next to no interest in running them back then. We did it for four weeks to try and get people into it and in the end we all switched back to the buggy. Pretty interesting how RC seems to be cyclical when it comes to what's popular. The 1/8 scale e-buggies are cool but the price, even when you do have access to a track, is really hard to swallow (especially if you have a wife).

That said, I will be running 2wd buggy this fall. More than likely it will be a 22.....or B4.1....I haven't decided.
