I first got addicted to Naveen for his great performance as Kip in "The English Patient." For me, the real love story in the film is between Kip and Hannah .... when he takes her to the church to look at the frescoes, I think that is the all time BEST DATE in a movie I've ever seen. FYI, it's worth to buy the DVD as there are several deleted scenes on the extras. (a quick interview as well). I still can't log in, but will continue to post. - Van

This movie was on last night, but when I flipped to it there was only about 20 minutes left! I'm thinking about buying it (even though I'm quite broke at the moment), simply because it's got both Naveen AND Ralph Fiennes. It gets no better than that.

the funny thing is, if you read the original novel by Michael Ondatje, Kip hoists up an old man, not Hana, to look at the frescoes!
english offbeat comedy duo Adam & Joe did an excellent parody of The English Patient using soft toys - The Toy Patient.

Naveen mercifully escaped being represented by a cuddly bear though....

That is so cute about The Toy Patient! lol I would have loved to have seen that!
That is really interesting too that in the novel Kip hoists an old man up to look at the frescoes and not Hana! Funny how things get changed when they do a movie.

that's interesting the switch from the novel to the film....I'm glad they switched it to Hannah, tho...as it is, Naveen's character isn't in the movie enough....I guess that novel was very hard to adapt....That scene is so beautiful! I wish I could see "The Toy Patient" - that looks like a SCREAM!

"The Toy Patient" is on the Adam & Joe DVD, not sure if it's available in the US.
there's also a spoof of Titanic (Toytanic) and Ally Mcbeal (Ally McSqueal) amongst other toy movie parodies.
be warned though- it's quite cynical english humour-
the Toy patient ends with an Oscar entering the room and saying in an american accent "I love it! it's so english! have 10 of me! bye!"

I am going to see if "The Toy Patient" is available ....nothing better than cynical English humour. I LOVE that picture you posted, it totally cracked me up. Seriously, Ralph is one thing, but it is Naveen and Juliette Binoche who make that movie what it is. I'm going to go look and see if that's available....I am still laughing over that photo, so I can only imagine the actual "Toy Patient."

I love English humour too. I used to watch The Young Ones (Rik Mayall, Nigel Planer, Adrian Edmondson etc.) years ago (when it was on re-runs on MTV) and always thought that was so funny. If you do find The Toy Patient for sale anywhere please let us know! I'd love to get it. Thanks so much!

If you want to order it and don't have a multi-region DVD player there is a great website that will transfer PAL to NTSC for only $14.95 at:http://www.videos2dvd.com/paltodvd.htmlShannon
My eyes are playing tricks on me today. I read that as "you can order a multi-region DVD player for only $14.95." Someone hasn't been getting enough sleep... -_-
Thank link is very helpful, though! They also transfer VHS to DVD. Sweet.

For anyone who has The English Patient on DVD - I was reading this article about it and it mentioned these Naveen scenes that were cut - are they included on the DVD? Thanks so much for the info!
Shannon
The article said:
So The English Patient is a British film after all, in that it provides a critique of Britishness: or rather, it would have done if - to draw out the final irony - all the scenes set in England, involving Lord Suffolk, Miss Morden and Naveen Andrews' Indian bomb-disposal expert had not been cut out because they weakened the thrust of what had become the central love story. But isn't that what always happens to British films these days: that before they can be made at all, their very Britishness has to be censored?

I read the script before the film was made, and I can't recall any scenes involving Kip in england. they might mean scenes in the book.
deleted scenes from the film with Kip are probably one where Hana asks Kip to kiss her when she ventures near an unexploded mine, and one involving a turtle crawling up to the fountain.

The deleted scene included Kip & Hanna on his bike (countryside was beautifully shot) and one deleted scene where Kip is balancing on one leg (caught up in a mine wire) and she kisses him "in case"...I am trying to recall other deleted scenes, I'll post if I recall later....

Thank you so much for the information. I'm definitely going to buy the DVD too. I really wish that they had included more of the Kip and Hana story and had included more of what was in the book about Kip. Naveen's portrayal of Kip is the best part of the entire movie and the Hana/Kip love story was so much more touching and sweet than the Katherine/Almasy love story. It will be fun to see those other scenes. Thank you so much again for the information.

It's out on Blu-Ray.
This review speaks well of Naveen.
The spectacular performances offered by the ensemble cast are another reason the film should not be disregarded. Juliette Binoche is simply stunning and extremely worthy of her Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She evokes a rare form of innocence that is endearing without being unbelievable and her scenes with co-star Naveen Andrews are some of the film’s best. Andrews is equally moving as Kip, helping to support Binoche’s sensuality.

Just read an interesting article on the differences between the movie and the book. According to the article there is a LOT more of Kip in the book, he is a very well rounded character and has a much deeper relationship with Hanah than we see in the movie. Certainly wish that had translated to the movie! Will have to read it, and picture Naveen in the Kip chapters... The article also bitterly complains about how Kip was "Orientalized" in the movie, although some (not all) of that criticism seems a bit over the top in my view. If anyone feels like posting the cut Naveen scenes on youtube I certainly won't complain! Not quite willing to pay money for a DVD that is mostly Ralphie and what's her name (I found THAT relationship a little disturbing).

Couldn't sleep last night so I got up and turned on the TV looking for something to watch and there was the English Patient. I hadn't seen it in a a while. Naveen was very young. He should be making movies like that now.

This is well worth a read... the original script of the movie. Follows the book much more closely than the film that was actually released. A lot more about Kip and Hana. Would have liked to have seen it, especially all the Kip and Hana scenes they ended up deleting and neutering! http://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/englishpatient.html
