I invite the club to join Capt. Sunshine and myself to sail
at FDR State
Park in Georgia
on October 3, 2009. The park is a few miles east of Calloway Gardens
and about 110 miles from our home port. Capt. Sunshine and I are staying in a
cabin, on Lake Delano, within the park. We plan to
arrive on Friday and leave on Sunday. The actual regatta is on Saturday the
3rd.
The regatta will take place on Lake
Delano and call attention
to Franklin Delano Roosevelt's love of boats, ships and all things nautical. We
believe this will be a unique experience for visitors and provide an
opportunity to let people know more about FDR, the Montgomery Model Boat Club
and promote the fun of model boating.
It will not be a complex event, but one of fun and simplicity where children
and adults alike come out, sail boats and have some fun. The FDR State park
will have their President Roosevelt re-enactor emcee the affair, while offering
additional educational programs that cover the many nautical themes like
sextant and compass reading, model ship building, knot tying and other
activities.
We picked a cool time of the year to do this and it just happens to coincide
with the anniversary of both the Park and the MMBC. We hope this will become a
really fun annual event for both of us.
I have a map of the park showing cabin locations available upon request. Get
your reservations early.
