ok so we need to confirm a hill for the east coast challenge.   Jerm has done some very nice video work to give us a preview of potential runs.  (maybe he can link them to this thread)  Adam also video'd 3 square hollow but its gravel and has 100' plus death drops so that wont work.

Some of us nj members will be taking a drive out west this weekend to scope some potential hills.  We want to mkae sure we have a couple back-ups .. We need to also have a rain hill.  It must be much mellower than the "dry" hill.  We all know why!

If your new and reading this, get out and race before you try to show up and do a 2+ mile ripper

The less busy the better.  This way we can mount  tree, guard rail, and or rock side line cameras to catch the action.   While the couple hills we currently have listed will be a rush, they are fairly main roads and lack the "twisties" that we all love.

So... get on google earth and find us a nice one.

 ok, linking video.

2009 East Coast Shootout Potential Courses Drive-Through from Jeremy Ashinghurst on Vimeo.

waggoner's gap south seems to be the favorite so far.  Doubling gap north is more mellow than the other runs and fairly straight, might make for a good rain run.  It is in the video as well.

Maybe a little too far north, but check out Sulpher Springs Rd just south of the river in Williamsport, PA.

ahh north side will take true drivers skill to make the mellow sections... 7% at the top.. hairpin looks mellow but that could be different on the actual pavement..4% grade from the hairpin to the quarry,,, ahhh

south looks like it would be 6% at 3miles

So, Jola and I went and checked out the hill that is west of Hagerstown this evening.
Google Earth 39-42-46-41N   77-58-25-29W

We came in from the south.  The mountain and the building seen on top appears to belong to AT&T.

The road up from the south is one lane in each direction, very smooth.  But right about 39-41-55-03N  77-58-37-67W, there is a gate that appears to be closed almost all the time and we can't go beyond that gate.

However, there is a small parking area right at the gate and we could start from that location.  This would give us a run just under a mile.

The run would be a very fast one!  The draw backs....The 2 lanes are narrow with no shoulder area.  The run would be a very fast one!  There are severe drops if you go off the road.  The run would be a very fast one!  There is post and cable guard rail in many areas that would be deadly if someone got into that in a soapbox car.  The run would be a very fast one!

Did I mention The run would be a very fast one!?  This would NOT be one for the timid!

The other draw back is that it is about 85 miles from here.

Not an ideal hill for the shoot out, and definately NOT one for the sissys!  But it would be a really fast run and certainly one to get the juices flowing.

If you miss that turn on Sulpher Springs at the quarry, the grade may get a bit steeper!

I think the north side from peak to quarry might be a little too mellow for the shootout, and the south side just has the one hairpin but few turns otherwise.  Plus those runs are way for north.

I still say waggoner's gap south for primary and doubling gap north backup, or even doubling gap south: it has a little more personality but does have a sharp turn that might not be good for rain, but it's a left with woods as a backstop, not some mile-long tumble downhill.

Plus, both waggoner's and doubling gap have decent staging areas.

If we do something in the general less-than-45-minutes-from-Harrisburg area, I have some friends from my time at college that I'd invite to come watch and help out (which is another reason I'm partial to those two hills)

I have been told about a hill up near Hazelton, PA that would be good.  A buddy is going to get me the info on it soon.

im starting to think we should go to reading and run the Pagoda hills .. there looks like there are 3 or 4 1.5+mile hills..  Might be busy though and there are a couple intersections that i cant tell who has the right of way.

I need to get up to Reading and take a look.  Tha pagoda hill is in the park, so there shouldn't be much traffic on a Sunday morning.  But this may add another problem - if the park is closed Sunday mornings, we might have to wait until 8 or 9 to run the hill.

I have to go to York tomorrow, so maybe when I'm done, if i don't have any other calls, I can slide by Reading and take a look.

The Hazelton area has a lot to offer.  So does Frackville, and a little place called Ravine.  All off I-81 north of I-78.

I wasn't able to make it to Reading today.  Dang customers just kept calling!

But I do have to go to York again Monday or Tuesday, so maybe I'll have a chance to slide by then and check things out.

Route 93 near Hazelton.

ends at  40-52-07-65N   75-47-21-57W

AND Hazelton General hospital is on this same road!  So if somebody screws up, we won't get lost finding the emergency room!

The Hazelton route 93 run is supposed to have a few more hills going towards the hospital.  That main run is going away from the hospital.

How opposed would you guys be to changing the date to Sept?    Our broken bone racers will be to fresh out of their slings and its going to be hard for them.  Not just racing but unloading and reloading is going to be tough for both of them.   PLus if we wait, Matt and brian will be back and ready to race also... If we race next month it will probably only be 4 of us where sept would be 8 to 12

I'm all for putting it off!  Jeremy and I each spent at least 30 hours last week getting ready for yesterday's race.  We could use a break.

Also, we had 3 new guys show up yesterday who are now ready to start building.  So maybe this would also give them the chance to get finished and put a race or two under their belt before we show up for a big crowd race.
