I did manage to remember how to work my VCR, so I got Lynn on today's "Tennessee Mornings" show with Charlie Chase on tape! She was actually on for a fairly short time, so I'm going to re-watch the tape and make good use of the pause button as I try to post a good recap. Let me say this in advance: I do not have a way to make a copy of this tape myself (either on VHS or DVD); sorry! I don't own the kind of machine that can record VHS to DVD, and to record VHS to another VHS tape requires two VCR's. The only VCR I own is built into my TV set.
Okay, here goes!
As the show came on at 7:00 a.m., co-host Kelly Sutton said that "Grammy Award winning country star Lynn Anderson" would stop by to "talk about her latest project and share some of her secret tips from the kitchen as well." As Kelly made that announcement, a clip of Lynn singing with the Carol Lee Singers from the Grand Ole Opry backing her up was show. I have no idea what that clip was from - maybe the DVD that's soon to be out? Several times as the show went to or came back from a commercial break, Lynn was mentioned. Fairly early on in the show as they came back from a commercial, Charlie Chase said that Lynn Anderson was "preparing to, number one, get in our shot, and also preparing the, is it Nacho Mama Salsa?" Off camera you could hear Lynn confirm "Nacho Mama," and Charlie repeated it again and went on "in the eight o'clock hour, just in time for breakfast."
Kelly then chimed in with "Oh, yum, I love it!" Another co-host named Brooke (can't remember her last name) segued into another feature coming up on the show, cell phone etiquette, and said "We'll have to ask Lynn her cell phone pet peeve a little later." (That was never mentioned when Lynn was on camera.) As the show came back from a later commercial break, Charlie said, "Lynn Anderson is standing by in the kitchen to do her salsa that, actually, the ingredients are making us cry from 15 feet away and she hasn't even mixed it up yet."
Kelly laughed and you could hear Lynn either laugh or say something from off camera but couldn't understand what she said. Kelly then said, "When she walked in, I said 'Oh, we're doing salsa!' and then I smelled the onion. Woooo! Came over me, so it's gonna be a little spicy. But you know, it is Lynn's, so you know it's gonna be spicy, right?"
Off camera Lynn said, "Spicy like me!"
Charlie and Kelly laughed and Charlie repeated, "Spicy like Lynn. And if she's not spicy enough, she brought the jalapenos over there, so those are in the mix."
Later on as the show prepared to go to another commercial break, Kelly announced that Lynn would be coming up in the second hour with a tasty recipe for tailgating parties, and the camera cut to Lynn holding a tray of snacks. Also on camera on the kitchen counter was a University of Tennessee baseball cap and T-shirt. Kelly also said Lynn would be telling us about her latest CD release as well.
As the show came back from the commercial break, Charlie announced that, coming up, Lynn would be showing a "Southeastern treat," then he corrected himself and said it was a Southwestern treat. Then it showed Charlie and Kelly in the kitchen with Lynn, who looked great in a light blue and white jacket, matching light blue cowboy hat, and a yellow shirt. She then showed them step by step how to make the salsa, and it's actually easy. At Lynn's instruction, Kelly put canned tomatoes, chopped onions, chopped jalapenos, cilantro, and garlic into the food processor that was on the counter. When Lynn went to turn on the appliance, it didn't have any power! They had a big laugh over that, then they were able to turn on the processor. The salsa mixed up within just a few seconds. Lynn then commented about the University of Tennessee's fight song being "Rocky Top" and that it was her favorite Lynn Anderson song. Lynn asked the band to play a little bit of "Rocky Top." They did, and she sang the chorus, along with some help from Kelly and Charlie.
Charlie then asked Lynn to tell about her latest CD. She said she'd just finished a Christmas CD, but when she went on to describe it, it sounded more like she was talking about her "Cowgirl" CD. She said her momma wrote all the songs on it and her daddy produced it. Charlie then asked Lynn about her charitable work (cancer care for children - started by Tom T. and Dixie Hall along with Bonnie Garner and Lynn), and she talked a little about that. Lynn then put her pink hat on over the blue one she already had on and talked about Mary Kay Cosmetics contributing to women's issues such as domestic violence and breast cancer research. Charlie and Kelly thanked Lynn for coming and again talked about how great the salsa was. Lynn said it opens up the sinuses! The show then went to another commercial break.
Coming back from that break, Charlie, Kelly, and weatherman Craig were cutting up about how hot Lynn's salsa was, and Craig even pointed a fire extinguisher at his mouth! They had a laugh about that.
That was it for Lynn's appearance. As short as her actual on-camera time was, she got plenty of mentions before and after her appearance, so I'm glad I got to see it!
