Hello everyone...!I Just came across the site and thought to register. I have not read all possible explanations that have been added in the forum cause there are thousands...! but I have come up with an idea of what might be the case with the island. It is most likely that someone else has made the same guess and if that's thecase please reply with more information.Scientists have developed theories according to which the universe includes at least seven dimensions. In our world however only three are visible to us and the fourth one which refers to time can only be observed by us inhabitants in the way in which objects change in a particular context (as time passes), however it is just not visible to us. According to those theories in order for someone to be able to observe time in the way we can observe width, length and depth, thatbeingwould have to exist in a fifth dimension (i.e. that many refer to as "spirituality"). That way the 4dimensional world (i.e. our world) would resemble a computer programme which the user would be ableto start and observe from beginning to end.I believe there were many examples throughout the three seasons that have indicated that the "others" could somehow travel to and observe different time periods (both in past and future). Does the island exist in a 5th dimension? What do you think?

If they could travel through time (as you stated, being a 4th dimension) I don't see a need for 5th, 6th and 7th dimension there? And Superstrings theory says about 10 dimensions - well actually it was mathematically proven that the 6 dimensions really exist - they are so small however, they cannot be measures nor accessed using current technology available...

Indeed if they were able to observe time from beginning to end (from let's say the big bang to a hypothetical similar but end-bringing event of the present universe) they would have to exist in the 5th dimension from where they would be observers of the rest four, in the same way that we currently exist in the 4th dimension being able to practically observe the rest three. Of course the rest proven dimensions are too small to be entered with current technology and that's simply because one would have to switch from their material form to their energy form, which in neurological terms is expressed by electomagnetism produced by the brain's electrochemical activities.Certainly, It is far from being proven that our brain's electromagnetism could generate inter-dimensional events. Don't you think though it is weird that electromagnetism in the series is a major issue? It has been shown to be connected to the crash of the plane (When Desmond once  failed to press the numbers on the computer in time). Don;t you think it is weird that the rescuer in the last few episodes mentioned that they were all found dead at the bottom of the ocean in real life? Or that Jack in the very last few seconds of the third series said to Kate that they were not supposed to live...? Why did Jack again talk about his father as if he was still alive, when we know that his father's funeral was the reason he was in that plane in the first place? And was Julliette just being ironic -in the last episode- when she said to Sawyer that she went to help him back at camp because of Karma? I don't recall the source but it's been implied that the law of causality is principal as moving along different dimensions. Don't forget it's only sci-fi...imagination is more important than knowledge.

locating a point on a plane (e.g. a city on a map of the Earth) requires two parameters ? latitude and longitude. The corresponding space has therefore two dimensions, its dimension is two, and this space is said to be 2-dimensional (2D). Locating the exact position of an aircraft in flight (relative to the Earth) requires another dimension (altitude), hence the position of the aircraft can be rendered in a three-dimensional space (3D). Adding the three Euler angles, for a total 6 dimensions, allows the current degrees of freedom ?orientation and trajectory ?of the aircraft to be known.

Time can be added as a 3rd or 4th dimension (to a 2D or 3D space, respectively). Then the aircraft's estimated "speed" may be calculated from a comparison between the times associated with any two positions. For common uses, simply using "speed" (as a dimension) is a useful way of condensing (or translating) the more abstract time dimension, even if "speed" is not a dimension, but rather a calculation based on two dimensions. (Actually, it is possible and useful to consider "spaces" with extra dimensions for representing velocity, because it helps solving certain equations)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st dimention is either latitude or longitude. But not both. if it consisted of both it would be two dimentional.

2nd dimention which is the combnation of Latitude and Longitude is a 2 dimentinal space. Such as a sheet of paper which hasn't any thickness to it. If it did have space between the two directions It would be 3D.

3rd dimention is the combnation of Latitude and Longitude with the addition of the space inbetween being counted. We as humans are 3D

"These three above  are the only  main dimentions and are the only ones that are concreate with hard evdence. the Other dimentions 4-11  are only estmated and theorized."

Additional dimensions

Theories such as string theory and M-theory predict that the space in general has in fact 10 or 11 dimensions, respectively, but that the universe, when measured along these additional dimensions, is subatomic in size. As a result, we perceive only the three spatial dimensions that have macroscopic size. We as humans can only perceive up to the third dimension while we have knowledge of our travel through the fourth. We, however can not perceive anything past the fourth.

4th dimention The fourth dimension is often identified with time, and as such is used to explain space-time in Einstein's theories of special relativity and general relativity. When a reference is used to four-dimensional co-ordinates, it is likely that what is referred to is the three spatial dimensions plus a time-line. If four (or more) spatial dimensions are referred to, this should be stated at the outset, to avoid confusion with the more common notion that time is the Einsteinian fourth dimension. This diemntion is only expernced as Time passes by. It's imposable to know where this dimention ends or begins.

5th dimention- Is kinda a dimention that over sees all dimentions. Often refeard to as Heaven. It is able to see the begining and end and in any direction of any space of any time without actualy being effected by time it's self in a sense it hasn't a beging  nor end. It simply always was. Also it hasn't an entrance or exit. This is also refeard to as Heaven in some walks of faith.

In physics, the fifth dimension is a hypothetical extra dimension beyond the usual three spatial and one time dimensions. Some scientists have speculated that the graviton, a particle thought to carry the force of gravity, may "leak" into the fifth or higher dimensions which would explain how gravity is significantly weaker than the other three fundamental forces. The Kaluza-Klein theory used a fifth dimension to unify gravity with the electromagnetic force, and now is seen as essentially a gauge theory with gauge group the circle group. M-theory suggests that space-time has eleven dimensions, seven of which are "rolled up" to below the sub-atomic level.

In 1993 the physicist Gerard 't Hooft put forward the holographic principle, which explains that the information about an extra dimension is visible as a curvature in a spacetime with one fewer dimensions. For example, holograms are three dimensional pictures placed on a two dimensional surface, which gives the image a curvature when the observer moves. Similarly, in general relativity, the fourth dimension is manifested in observable three dimensions as the curvature of path of a moving infinitesimal (test) particle. Hooft has speculated that the fifth dimension is really the spacetime fabric.

If strings theory is true, we all are "present" in all 10 dimensions, since the strings creating our world vibrate in all dimensions. How this can be possible?

The basic idea behind all string theories is that the constituents of reality are strings of extremely small size (possibly of the order of the Planck length, about 10−35 m) which vibrate at specific resonant frequencies.[13] Thus, any particle should be thought of as a tiny vibrating object, rather than as a point. This object can vibrate in different modes (just as a guitar string can produce different notes), with every mode appearing as a different particle (electron, photon, etc.). Strings can split and combine, which would appear as particles emitting and absorbing other particles, presumably giving rise to the known interactions between particles.

In addition to strings, this theory also includes objects of higher dimensions, such as D-branes and NS-branes. Furthermore, all string theories predict the existence of degrees of freedom which are usually described as extra dimensions. String theory is thought to include some 10, 11, or 26 dimensions, depending on the specific theory and on the point of view.

Interest in string theory is driven largely by the hope that it will prove to be a consistent theory of quantum gravity or even a theory of everything. It can also naturally describe interactions similar to electromagnetism and the other forces of nature. Superstring theories include fermions, the building blocks of matter, and incorporate supersymmetry, a conjectured (but unobserved) symmetry of nature. It is not yet known whether string theory will be able to describe a universe with the precise collection of forces and particles that is observed, nor how much freedom the theory allows to choose those details.

One intriguing feature of string theory is that it predicts the possible number of dimensions in the universe, in the sense that it is consistent only in a certain number of dimensions.

Unlike general relativity, string theory allows one to compute the number of spacetime dimensions from first principles. Technically, this happens because, for a different number of dimensions, the theory has a gauge anomaly. This can be understood by noting that a photon included in a consistent theory (technically, a particle carrying a force related to an unbroken gauge symmetry) must be massless. The mass of the photon which is predicted by string theory depends on the energy of the string mode which represents the photon. This energy includes a contribution from the Casimir effect, namely from quantum fluctuations in the string. The size of this contribution depends on the number of dimensions since for a larger number of dimensions, there are more possible fluctuations in the string position. Therefore, the photon will be massless ? and the theory consistent ? only for a particular number of dimensions.

When the calculation is done, the universe's dimensionality is not four as one may expect (three axes of space and one of time). Bosonic string theories are 26-dimensional, while superstring and M-theories turn out to involve 10 or 11 dimensions. In bosonic string theories, the 26 dimensions come from the Polyakov equation.

If the writers of Lost would like involve extra dimensions in the story they would rather use some scientific explanation (strings theory and M-theory are the latest trends there) or just look for some paranormal sources (which in my opinion is more likely in the case since scientific theories of higher dimensions are rather difficult to explain in a short time and might look strange to most of the viewers). So I doubt the time dimension in scientific sense will be the answer to the island misteries.
