Hi All, Been pretty busy, so havn't been able to post 'till now, but thought I'd let you all know about the endurance race Stephanie and I did last week. The Limestone Challenge is held in our homtown of Cave Junction, and is rated as one of the toughest rides in the Pacific Northwest. Many say its tougher then Tevis- just shorter! Anyway, much of the track is what Steph and I train on all year, so we were really looking forward to this one. Unfortunatly, Diego, the big gelding I've been using all season, got a stick stuck through his coronet band on a ride a few weeks ago. Just before the ride, it abcessed, so he was out. Luckily, a friend had an Arab gelding in shape for me to borrow, so I at least could still ride. Steph of course rode her Kiger mare Kelsey. I have to say, training on parts of the track was one thing- but the race itself was unlike anything I've ever done. These mountains knocked several top contenders clear out of the running! Riders were still coming in after midnight, exausted. The good news, though, is Steph and Kelsey TOP TENNED!!!! A classic case of a Kiger showing how it's done in the mountains!!! Steph is still on cloud nine! Brian

Hey Brian, give STeph a BIG congratulations!!!!! Good for her.  And especially on such a difficult ride.

What is the outlook for Diego?  I've heard an injury to that area can sometimes be problematic.  Hope he is ok.

Thanks everyone!

We were going to do the 55, but the horse I was borrowing wasn't up to it, and we wanted to ride together as much as possible, so we did the 30. Energizer also won BC on the 50. He is an Arab/Spanish Mustang cross bred here in Cave Junction.

Diego is doing well, and is sound again. I'm riding him, but no more endurance for him (just to be sure) this season.

Kelsey's 9, and Steph did show for BC, but it went to another horse....maybe next time!! I've been packing for the last couple weeks, leave again Mon., but Steph will be doing Dust Devil on Kelsey. We've got tons of photos, I just need figure out how to post them!!

Hey Brian, I love to hear how you two are doing on these endurance races.  I'm sure this question has been asked, but I couldn't remember.  Do you shoe the ones you take on these races?  Thanks!

Hey Nicole,

Yes, we did put shoes on them this season, but mainly because we'd been told that we had to. Some rides require them. Jillian though also did several rides, and her mare was barefoot and did more than just fine!

We'll probably keep putting at least fronts on them though. Gives them a little more traction and me some more peace of mind.

Brian

Does anybody ever have trouble with barefoot horses slipping on dry grass or pine needles when the ground is hard and dry under them?  I've noticed that.  I had my horse shod for about a month just so he'd had the experience and he slid much less with shoes under those circumstances.
