For starters try looking in the BR 50/50 22 match magizines. There should be some fine smiths listed. StinkyReply to : Ekspurt
Anybody want to recommend a rimfire gunsmith for rebarreling an Anschutz Exemplar?I won a 50% off Shilen barrel certificate at the Nebr. State Championships this year and called Shilen only to find out that they don't do rimfire barrel mounting. Upon reflection, this sounds odd considering they have 4 different rimfire chambers on their list of available chamberings.Anyway, it looks like I will have to buy the barrel and send it and my gun to someone else to mount it. There is one local guy who has a good reputation with centerfire guns but I have heard of no one who has had any rimfire work done with him.So, anyone want to brag up their gunsmith?

Without a doubt, the best rimfire gunsmith is Bill Calfee in Borden, IN. The originator of the Calfee XP-100 conversion to rimfire for silhouette and benchrest. He has also done Exemplar's, including one that I've owned since 1989. It is an outstanding shooter and his work is fantastic.
Phone/Fax Number 1-812-967-2413
Send him a fax at this number He won't answer the phone, as he is very busy building guns. Don't take it personally, he is one of the finest people you'll ever meet (he's built 7 guns for me, and still won't answer my calls!). Let him know what you want and find out about his turn time...last I heard, he's got about a 2 year backlog of work, but find out direct from him.

Thanks for the suggestions but, and don't take this the wrong way, I was hoping for a more practical, affordable list of competent gunsmiths and not a who's who of the artisan crowd.
Sure, I thought of Calfee, Kelbly, Borden, Hoehn, K.C. Young, etc. But those guys, besides the waiting list, are really not necessary for the job I have in mind. There is no threading involved since the barrel is pinned in. Just cut the extractor grooves, headspace, drill the pin hole, crown, bead blast and drill & tap for the front sight.
This has to be done as affordably as possible to get by the wife. Thanks.

Kelly,
I have a neighbor that has a lathe and milling machine in his garage and tinkers mainly with rimfires. He is not a gunsmith, per se, but he has rebarrelled a couple of Ruger MKII's for me for silhouette, and likes to shoot rimfire benchrest. He has never charged me for any work yet. This man does excellent work and I am lucky to have him here. If you are interested, I can contact him for you. You would have to negotiate with him what it is worth to you. If he is not in the middle of a move, turn-around should be pretty quick.

Thanks Larry. I'll keep it in mind. To be honest, this is the other end of the spectrum and I'm hoping for something in the middle. I have a couple of ideas in mind (IHMSA members and gunsmiths) but want to gather as many choices as I can before I decide.

Kelly, there is someone here in Louisiana that you may consider --- Mike Brazda at Bayou Teche Guns, Arnauldville, LA. He just rebarreled an Anschutz for Richard West and did a beautiful job - and, his turnaround time seems reasonable. He has also done a lot of XP work. He will definitely do my next rebarrel job. His phone number is (337) 754-5115 --- Philip Braud

If you are looking for someone in the middle, give Fred Smith at Bullberry Barrel Works a call. Fred rebarrels XP's. He did a friend's for $350, and he is well pleased.
I see no reason why he would not do an Anschutz.
Best of luck.

You may also want to call Dave Logosz in North Dakota. Don't know off hand if he does rimfire, but he does very good work.
