I recently purchsed a Dan Wesson 44 magnum, VH8. What was of most interest to me was the serial number. IHMSA1976. Does anyone know the background of this weapon. Was it a commemorative? Maybe a giveaway or prize? Possibly what year was it from? Any information would be welcome.

These were guns that were marketed by "The Silhouette" and Elgin Gates back in the early 80's. You could order a gun with your IHMSA number as part of the SN. This may be one of those guns.

I had one of those revolvers in .44 mag and I sold it. I bought the revolver from the silhouette. IHMSA was a part of the serial number. The revolver had a timing problem. I returned it to the factory for repairs and when it was returned, it would shoot. I am still kicking myself for selling the gun.

The revolver that you have is in fact an IHMSA special serial numbered Dan Wesson. These were offered to IHMSA members with our ISHMA numbers on them. We were offered these in 1981. Many were delivered starting in June of 1981. The revolver that you have was for a member that had joined the IHMSA about January of 1976 from the number that is on the revolver. If you can check with the IHMSA you may find the original owners name by the number if they kept the records of the early members. This persons member number would have been 1976. The revolvers shoot extreemly well and do not seem to wear out. Reply to : IHMSA2249

Some of these may have had special serial numbers matching your IHMSA number, but others were sold through the Silhouette paper with IHMSA serial numbers that were part of a batch sold to Elgin by the company. I have had several of these over the years, but the only one I have left is a 445 SM DW with 445S-IHMSA-17 as the number.
