what I was told(so take it for what its worth) is that rifled barrel pistols must be registered. When I registered my IZH they had no problem finding it in their "list". Given the possible consequences of getting caught with a non-registered pistol (that may or maynot have to be registered), I would say get the green card and have it registered. Last thing any of us wants is to get popped by some dip$%^@ that doesn't know the law. If someone can get someone official to state that it not required, in writing, then that would be another story. Now, the other grey area is do you have to buy in state and go thru the "process" or just mail order and do the obligitory green card registration... a 4473 isnt required by federal law if I remember correctly...

Andy and Brent,
Hope this sets you both straight.
First thing there is no gun registration in Michigan. There is a safety inspection with your local Sheiffs dept on "handguns". Handguns fall under the term "Firearm" in the MI statutes 8.3t and is later defined under "handguns as well.
It states, The word "firearm", except as otherwise specifically defined in the statues, shall be constued to include any weapon from which a dangerous projectile may be propelled by using explosives, gas or air as a means of propulsion, except any smooth bore rifle or handgun designed and manufactured exclusively for peopelling BB's not exceeding .177 calibre by means of spring, gas or air.
If your handgun is of .177 calibre, and is rifled and is propelled by one of the above means....it needs to be safety inspected in MI.
Its your choice not to purchase from a dealer in MI. If you do this however and do not follow the procedure for saftey inspection, you can and will be charged with carring a pistol with out paperwork, its a $2500 fine with a 5 year jail stay and is grounds to lose you CPL if you have one.
There is no grey area. Just a bunch of store clerks and cops that dont know the law giving most all bad info.

Steve is right on about the safety inspection of pellet guns. But what about the permit to purchase?

If buying in MI from a dealer you will need a purchase permit. If an auction house was selling them without, then it was illegal, assuming the guns met the items mentioned above. Most out of state dealers will no longer sell to MI residents and several other states that have stupid laws such as ours.
Moving aint an option Kelly. We love it here other than the air gun laws....we can live with them because of all the other awesome stuff we have. Saturday we had good snow on the ground, then it got up to 50 degrees and melted and started flooding, then this am we had thunder and lightning, most of the day we had 50 mile per hour winds....now its snowing again....
Who has time for stupid air gun laws eh? Why would we move?LOL

Thanks for the info. Steve. Well it may technically be a "safety inspection" and not "registration", but I found it funny that the last pistol I took in for the "safety inspection" wasn't even taken out of the box when the lady at the sherrifs office didn't register it.
Kelly, I just moved to MI two years ago from Iowa. There is a lot more activity in many different shooting sports here than there was in Iowa. So, a couple more hoops to jump through for handguns isn't to bad. I do miss the pheasant hunting though :-(

ok steve, you got me... tho' registration/safety inspection is just symantics. Havent met a clerk yet that didnt bit&$ because I brought something in that didnt match her little "sheet" and caused a little more effort or one that would recognise weather the bolt was in the gun to allow it to fire. But you and I have been down this road before... sometimes too often eh? Dont you yearn for the simple things in life.... figuring out which hillside to shoot from to get the 1k shots at a pdog?
andy, lived in iowa for 3 years and never saw as many as at my dads in SD. Course he can get beligerant about letting people hunt there and he has a bit of a refuge going at times. He likes to watch them. I've known him to shoot one of his dogs for chasing them. Not too much of a line from chasing pheasants to chasing chickens which is an automatic death sentance... no appeals allowed.

You need to come to Nebraska. We've got ...um...uh...well, we've got silhouette! And we've got ...er...oh yeah, prairie dogs! We've got those too. Um...pheasants. Yeah, now we're cookin'. And ...hmm...lets see...umm...well, it's real flat. And ...uh...did I mention silhouette?

Kelly, I was born there. Its almost as hard of state to drive thru as kansas. You might wind up with buffalo in your back yard if my pops decides to pack up and head south a couple of miles.

Safety inspections for air guns You have got to be pulling ole papa's leg. You have got my gout to acting up. My first thought was what part of California is Michigan in. However, I do know a little about geography. I have been to Michigan a couple of times. It is a beautiful state. Come on down to Texas, we don't have safety inspections, gun registrations and we can go to a gun show, buy a gun and walk out with it. We can hang the gun in the back window of our truck, slap on a "God bless John Wayne" sticker and drive right down the middle of main street. We have most of the critters you mention except moose and bear, world class hunting and some pretty dad gum good shooters. Come on down.

Come on out, Steve. This state is pretty crowded but I saved a little room for you. We'll try to show you a good time no matter which part of the year you come. There's silhouettes in the summer and winter, hunting in the fall and winter and my wife's annual spring cleaning binges beginning any day now. Pray for me.

Yes sir PaPa.....we have them laws here. Just last week on the news I seen a guy arrested for holding up the bank here with a single shot pump air gun....just kidding ya know.
Seems like all this weird stuff came in with our Demacratic governer from Canada....which she would have stayed there, then Pete and the boys would have to deal with her.
I will make it back to Nebraska and South Dakota someday....ifin I get the erge to go.

Down here in Texas we shoot bank robbers and horse theives. Best not be riding a stolen horse to a bank robbery, espically with all the good ole boys riding up and down main street armed to the teeth. Fast trip to boot hill. Makes the "dumb crook" headlines to.

Guys and Gals,
I live in Jackson, Michigan.
I can tell you one thing (forgive the frustration), you CANNOT buy an airgun without a permit in this state.
I also shoot 10m AP, and I wanted to scream when I was forced to go to the sheriff's office with my then new IZZY, so they could say, "what's that?". It was maddening! All because of Michigan's crazy handgun laws!
I have a very reputable gun store near me that swears up and down, that you DO NOT need a permit and will sell me any air pistol they have! So that's nice, but I called the Jackson Sheriff's department and after being transferred like 4 times, they said "no, you need a permit to purchase".
Bummer, bummer, bummer!
So in Michigan at least, the counties think you need a permit, but the gun stores are mixed on what they think.
It's crazy! I don't know how much I helped, but needless to say, I'm going to the gun store that does not require a permit to buy my new Crosman 2300s at lunch today! : 0

No regs hum - I bet a file is created. Safety - what happens if it fails - and what are the pass/fail
rules. And we don't have the option to buy there when we live in other states.

John, just make sure to take your newest addition to the sheriffs office and get a green card for it! Its not worth the jail time/ loss of all your other firearms not to have it!

John,
Your dealer is WRONG!!!!! If the gun shoot bb's ONLY there are no purchase permit/saftey inspection requirements. If it can shoot pellets it is a firearm and requires all of the same paperwork.
As for registration bit. Recent events have brought forth the light that while the safety inspection is not registration, the purchase permit is recorded and used as de-facto registration.
Regarding the safety inspecftion. When the green cards actually said "Safety Inspection" there was a little disclaimer that said it was not a functional inspection but a "cursory" inspection.

If you go back to the 3rd post of this subject, you will read word for word the law. I typed it right from the current laws of handguns in michigan. Published by the State Police.
