I have a 4 year old Lowrance multifunction GPS/Sonar unit that keeps shorting out when powered up.  I tried doing the obvious rewiring, etc. trying to find if the cause of the problem was my work.  I finally called Lowrance and they say the short is in the unit head.  However Lowrance does not service this unit any longer.  (Imagine that!).Does anyone know of someone reputable and local (monmouth county) that repairs electronics?Dan Brady

Dan there is a guy that works p/t at West Marine, A.H., Tom Duane.  He has a business called Shore Electronics. 732-241-2664.  I have never used him, but I know of others that have and they had nothing but good words for his work.

Give him a call & let me know how you make out.

Ron,

I got in touch with Tom Duane and he was more than willing to make a house call to the boat to test my cables and connections with a meter.  (He even offered to do this at no charge).  I told him I needed to get the unit back on the boat, and he was going to stop by the next day while I was at work.  Tom did say that he doesn't go into the units to work on the solid state ciruitry.

While putting the unit back on the boat I gave it a good smack, hooked it up, and it was working again without blowing fuses.  ?????????  I played around with the GPS function for about 15 minutes and didn't blow the fuse.  I called Tom back and told him to hold off on stopping by until it starts shorting out again.   I didn't want to waste his time since he was coming from Union Beach.

All said, he was very helpful on the phone with some suggestions (which I'll try).  He offered to drop everything to help me out if needed.  I still may need him if his suggestions don't pan out.

Thanks for the referral.

I had a computer that I fixed the same way.

I used Tom Duane and would recommend him if it turns out that you need service.
