Had Hi-Mar member Joe (Tuna Tales) Tomaszewski's (Basking Ridge) team consisting of Dave Donato (Flemington), Greg Riker and Sean Gill (Hopatcong) out to defend the team's 1st place 2008 New Jersey Hunter Striperthon Tournament finish on the NetKeeper. John Toronto did a great job in the cockpit.
Acting on a report from a few days earlier, John and I went in search of Bunker up the Navesink Friday night with no luck. We did see a Bluefish blitz by the Oceanic bridge. With no Bunker, I offerred the guys the option of trying for the homerun and going to GK for Bunker or fishing the hot bite on Clams so they opted for the Clam bite.
We shoved off in the Grey light and pea soup fog conditions. Fish bit better for us in the cooler and cleaner water. As it warmed and got light coffee like in the afternoon it seemed as if the bite shutdown, for us at least.
We never had a mad dog bite, we just picked away in spurts on three of five drops. Great bunch of guys who never stopped fishing. The guys boxed 6 quality Striped Bass (four between 14 and 19 pounds) and released another six. Three of the Stripers were released with ALS tags. They also boxed what they needed in blues before going into release mode them too.
Greg caught the 19lb 15oz fish which captured 2nd place in the 2009 New Jersey Hunter Striperthon tournament. The added bonus for this trip was putting Dave on his 1st keeper Striped Bass
