Some of us cant get through the damned HGV ministry test due to rear axle  brake Imbalance. !!

Reply to : jfb350Reply to : Well, My-self !They say "Nothing Runs Like A DEERE"Well an RB44 Sure Does`nt !Following on from above thread , Li`ll Joe got his new shoes and gave them a 350 mile trip to hopfully bed em in. On re-test we could only manage 47% braking effort so failed (Not enough contact on the drums)So got off the drums again and savaged em with the old sandpaper, Also noting that one thick & one thin lining on opposite sides were ... CRACKED !! Arrrrgh
Hi John, i met someone that drives RB's for the mod recently, and he hated them too. Reckon theyre all spoilt, i love mine, certainly wouldnt swap it for an mk/j. H

H Hi there H/C, I think many folks are spoilt the way motors are so easy & forgiving to operate nowadays ,thats why they all drive too fast I reckon. The proud RB 44 owner is definately a minority .I mean after reading up all the moans in parliament about the defective items on them and then dive out and buy one with confidence in your optimism .
think i better check that sediment bowl before my head gets any bigger!!  cheers John. H

Just reading some of the trials of low brake effort,,  when the  bus chassis  market took off  I  had to make a in house video  to teach the dealers and bus operators how to suck eggs and  why  the rear shoe adjustment was important,,  the main mistake was to adjust the rear shoes with tension in the handbrake cables..  always disconnect the cable and then  seriously lock up the adjuster, reconnect /adjust the cable to just take the clevis then back off the adjuster to just free the wheel .

if the cable holds  the shoes open then efficiency is lost, excessive loads are put into the shoe  & the self servo effect cracks the linning, as application is not progressive,,  just wondering if I still Have a copy ...peter

I have been away in the States up to 2 days ago so have not yet got round to sorting my RB44 brakes yet.So your info comes just at the right time. It would be interesting to see the old tape if it is ever available.    Cheers for now.     John

A point on the hub oil seals if they were the cassette type you must remove part on the axle tube or stub and refit it into the hub seal then refit as an assembly as this controls the alignment and preload on the lip.

if you shove the hub over the fixed wear ring you tunr the seal lip inside out

the RB 44 video is now available on dvd for easy posting,, will do the one on brakes  next  Peter

And I must say sorry John for leaving youi in the learch, I am now back and posting, looking after the site and the rear brakes were based on the s35 rear brakes, which supprised me loads.

Oh yeh, will reply to your pm now LOL.

The rb44 dvd is well good.
