DODGE 50 ANGLOCO 4x4 HOSE LAYER

REGISTRATION No B317 VFJ - CALLSIGN 17-5 AND  LATER 31-5

Picture

SEEN HERE AT EAST DIVISION WORKSHOPS EXETER

This Hose Layer, built on a Dodge 50 chassis was originally attached to station 17 Torquay, but spent several years at Totnes before being retired from the brigade.  Seen here badged for Torquay, the appliance carried flaked hose, dams and several small pieces of equipment.  It was also awkward to drive due to it's high centre of gravity which made the vehicle sway.

All brigade drivers who drove this vehicle were required to attend 4 wheel drive familiarization training, which for us was held at Plymouth airport's rough terrain driving course which is used for their own airport crash tender drivers.
As you can well imagine, definately one of the better brigade courses.

Picture
The hose layers high front end was due to installation of the front drive axle.  The original headlights are seen here blanked out and the lights installed much lower on the bumper.  Note also the rubber extension skirts underneath the front wheel arches.

Picture
The hose layer seen from the back.  The central roller shutter door opened onto a fold down step and central walkway, with the flaked hose on both sides, laid out the full length of the vehicle body.  Shelving, on both sides of the vehicle, which was fixed approximately 2/3rds of the height above the hose was used for storing dams and equipment. The lockers on the outside held branches, dividing breeches, control breeches, hydrant keys and bars etc.  The two triangular brackets seen on the back, supported the two drop down doors on either side of the vehicle, which acted as ramps as the hose was played out.  The second crew member stood on the vehicle in the open doorway behind a drop down barrier, controlling operations for the driver with a push button buzzer system.

This appliance was rebadged for Totnes and had the callsign 31-5.  To the right of the picture is Honiton Fire Station's Dennis D appliance and East Division's workshop van.
