SteveJ below is correct according to manual . :   diesel engine type detergent oil  (15/40 ? )    capacity says 3.4 litres

Mines been running on gear oil  because thats what came out of it when I first got it off the MOD.   Ah well    Thanks for the pointer.
It has always operated as it should do . Bit late now I suppose.

 Hi mate the gear lever that operates your hi/lo on your transfer box is it cable rod  or air operated I need one for my transferbox the one I need is cable rod

 According to the army manual 2320-E-200-601 page 6 the transfer box takes OMD90 oil which is the same as the engine oil spec.
The transmission and differentials and the front CV joints take OEP220 which is gear oil.

My Transfer box like all MOD RB44`s is cable operated from the incab lever.In fact I think all RB`s including the 7.5ton Utility models are cable operated. It will be the diff.lock actuator which is  Air (on RB75`s) or vaccuum operated on lighter weight models with vacuum assisted brakes.
 You need someone breaking RB44`s for your lever assembly & cable. There must be some for breaking because they have mostly been sold off by now. & some have been not exactly runners . Where they have gone I dont Know.

don't no if its possible but I have a lever off dave crouch but he has chopped all the cables when breaking would you be able to measure the length of cable and cable housing if I had that info I would beable to get one nicked up

Many have been exported to south Africa, I get lots of enquiries for parts from exporters and companies from all over, latest is Tanzania will pop up a pic of their RB44 later

Thanks for that info Greg.   Thought there didnt seem to be much sign of any  here considering they have been selling em off in 20`s & 30`s for some time now.  Guy at Withams told me they were nearly all gone now.

Quite a few have been sold in the uk and are used as shooting vehicles, even one is used to pull the cable to lift gliders up into the air at a place in sussex near lewes, there are two used as underground support vehicles and never see the light of day or rain in a mine in Ireland, two in Canada that I know of being restored, just sent brake shoes and door locks out there.

I measured the cable underneath lay on the floor in the rain for ya.   It appears 40" long plus about 4" in the cab.
It`s a sturdy old thing Merlo. & I think you gonna need a picture of it really. There are obviously fittings each end & threaded adjuster & clevis type end fittings etc.   It`s a thick ,strong cable for sure.

thanks for that if you could upload a picture of cabel and gear lever that would be a great help 
i have a few questions you may be able to help me with

my truck is now running and the tranfer box seems to be running fine but with having no cable or lever dont no if it in hi or lo gear 
 if the rod on the transfer box is pushed in to the transfer box is that lo gear ?

also can you tell me abit about the diff lock and what its used for ? when i engage the diff lock  the light on the dash does not light up should it or when should it ? and if so any idea why it is not ?

Yes if the rod is pushed in the transfer will be in Low Ratio.
I`ll sort picture ASAP.
Diff lock is only to be used on loose or slippery surfaces OR a straight line driving on hard surfaces .
It wont let the front turning wheels to travel at the neccessary different speed to the rear diagonally opposite
 wheel & therefore transmission "wind-up" results.  Hard steering ,scrubbed tyres & strain on the gears.
It is just for when most traction is needed, giving equal locked drive to both front & rear axles.
Light sometimes takes a few metres of travel before coming on/going off.   Or it might have a fault . or it might not be working at the switch/knob or the actuator on the box ?

 if you were to get a 24v alternator and rig it under your alternator you can then pop two batteries togfther to make 24v and bobs ya uncle, am sure Johns (JFB350 forum name) RB44 has a extra alternator, maybe it was someone elses but the radio bodied RB's did have 12v main and 24v for FFR via a big 24v alternator.

at least this is what my brain is telling me, some of the above might just be an invention of my own imagination
