Hi Ladies!
Would anyone be interested in a thread where we talk about books we've read?
I have been devouring books lately, and would love to have someone to chat with about it, and to get new book ideas.....

I have been reading cheesy novels lately.  I read Murder Most Frothy by Cleo Coyle - it is a mystery series that revolves around coffee.  I have read several in that series and they are good for a nice light read.

I am also almost done with the first book of the 39 Clues series.  It is actually a book for kids (middle school age maybe) - but I started reading it at the bookstore while Sydney was looking at books and I got hooked.  I just got the second book as a gift.

I have been reading a bunch of historical novels from my in-laws, but right now I'm reading Pucker Up: A Hands-On Guide to Ecstatic Sex by Tristan Taormino.  It's not all my cup of tea, but some parts are highly informative and imaginative.  I'm only half-way through it, because it's something I don't feel comfortable reading in front of the kids (yes, even I have boundaries).

Next I have some vampire book from Viki.  I should lend her my book... I wonder what her hubby would make of that?

Re:Book Club
(Date Posted:01/06/2009 06:40:29)

I just finished one of Stephen King's newer books (aside from the Dark Tower Series, I hadn't read ANY of his post-accident stuff!) called Duma Key.  Good book, fun to read King again - I just love how he writes and creates his characters.  But in almost-always-true Stephen King style, he just neatly wrapped it up at the end, sure a few people died, but had he wanted to make it dramatic and not neat, it would have been cool.  I just always feel like he either has a deadline to meet so has to finish it quickly, or he gets sick of the book and decides to pull it all together.

Now I LOVE Stephen King, and you all probably know that - if you didn't already, now you do.  So I don't like saying that about him.  But I wish he'd finish a book as strangely and unnerving as he is in the beginning and middle!!!  Maybe I'll write to him.  Or I'll go find him and tell him what I think!  Ha!

Good idea, Kerry!  I like book discussions!

I'm looking for a new book.  I may actually have to go to a store or something for one - Stacy, Kerry, ANYONE:  Got a decent book for me?  I'm still in the mood for spooky/mystery/unnerving/odd - not a crotch novel or love story.  And I read slowly, so don't expect it back soon - 2 months is quick for me!

Two months - it takes me a lot longer unless I read while walking on the treadmill.

You can come over and check out our library anytime...it covers an entire wall of our office.  I have a lot of mystery and history novels.  Brent has some wacky stuff too.

i suppose I should know who is living with Brent, but I don't. So I am wondering who the "Guest" is that I can come to their house and peruse their library???

Sue Ellen, I just skimmed through a book about dedications. It is a compilation of the story behind different dedications in books such as a Dean Koonz, a S. King, To kill a Mockingbird, etc. Kind of interesting. I'm not a S.King fan, but John has a few of them. He likes Dean Koonz and The Prey series by some dude. The Prey series stars a man/cop who lives by the Miss.River! The author is from here....

I just read the White Tiger, a Man Booker Prize winner (which I love them) about India. Funny little easy read.
And I read the Russian Concubine. Kind of good.
And I've been doing the Boleyn books. Which I think are historical Harlequin. I've never read a Har. Romance, but these queens and courtiers sure seem to live it.
But I like getting some history, I am so ignorant of so much of it.

ANyway, right now I'm reading Bill Bryson (who could write about broccoli and make it interesting!!!) "Shakespeare" a kind of bio. It will enhance my Boleyn reading for the 1500-1700's in England. But if you ever want a good read, read Bryson. Travel - A Walk in the Woods (one of the best of all time), A Sunburned Country about Australia, A brief history of everything (general interesting reading), The LIfe and times of the Thunderbolt Kid (of his growing up in the 50's. I has a part I think I'll go look up now just to laugh again).
So, obviously I could go on and on.
Mystery is not my strong suit. ALot of people love Patricia Cornwell.....

I'll post this now and see if any of you are there.
Kerry

I'm reading the "Prey" series by John Sandford (thanks Marie!!).  They're who-done-it by a local author, so there's a lot of Minneapolis references which is pretty cool.  There are about 10 books in the entire series, and I'm on number 5, so if anyone wants to start, just let me know and I'll bring the ones I've read.  You kinda have to read them in order, since there are references to things that happened in previous books.  Also, I'm a slow reader (about 10 pages before my head hits the pillow at night).  Just let me know.

Now I am reading the newest Louise Erdrich, "Plague of Doves".
It is good. Some laugh out loud funny too.
I have read EVERYTHING she writes for adults. And I have visited her local bookstore.
Anyone read her?

Yeah - I said it was a cheesy mystery novel...
http://www.amazon.com/Cookie-Murder-Swensen-Holiday-Mysteries/dp/0758206828/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232038221&sr=8-1

I see this one has not so great reviews on Amazon - but I did enjoy the Fudge Cupcake Murder and the Peach Cobbler Murder by the same author.  I am only on chapter 4 (I don't find much time to read) - so I can't say whether this one is as good as the others yet.

I also read the Coffeehouse series by Cleo Coyle - again sort of cheesy but decent mysteries.

 Sue Ellen,

You can come peruse my in-home library, too...I can't think of anything mystery/odd off the top of my head (except Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, but that is soooo thick I'm anticipating it will take me a long time to read it, and I'm a  pretty fast reader....so, that's probably a year or so investment of time that you might not want to make. We have a wide variety of books, though.

I second Kerry on how good Bill Bryson is. I haven't read his Shakespeare one (yet), but I have read the Australia one. I also really love "A Walk in the Woods." I have a whole shelf of his books.

Right now I'm reading "Rise and Shine" by Anna Quindlen; it's about two sisters, one is like a Katie Couric-type TV host. I don't know if it's any good yet or not.

The Billy Bryson Shakespeare wasn't terrific. Sad to say.
There isn't much about S. out there, and so it was more about the world he lived in. Still not that great. I'd recommend skipping it.
I am about to finish up The Constant Princess by P.Gregory. Another of the "queen" books I call them. Harelquin with history. Interesting to read some of it last night after the inaguration. Just to think about the differences in monarchy versus democracy, in how women are treated now adays, to compare a princess and Michelle, who I find to be immensely cool, pretty, intelligent, confident, someone to aspire to be.

I want to get Melissa on here, she reads alot, and we chatted via email, but still no forum activity by her I see....

 Kerry,

I haven't started Philippa Gregory stuff yet because I know I would love it and be so sucked in that I wouldn't get to all the gazillions of other books I want to read. Another historical fiction writer that I love is Tracy Chevalier. I haven't read "Girl with a Pearl Earring,"but I loved both "The Virgin Blue" and "Lady and the Unicorn." Do you want to borrow my (non-fiction) biography of Eleanor of Aquitaine, by Alison Weir?

oooh. ALison Weir! I have her bio of H VIII, and will read it after I Read the fiction Gregory books. Then I can compare!! So I know Weir is a respected author. I confess I do not know who Eleanor Aquitaine is.
I would love to borrow the book tho!
Would you need it back at a certain time?

And thanks for the tip about Chevalier. I haven't heard of those books, but will check them out!

Kerry,

I don't need the book back at any certain time: I own it, and I've read it. Eleanor of Aquitaine was a queen of France, and England. (lots of land battles back in those days...) She was the mommy of Richard the Lionhearted (the good king in the Robin Hood stories...of course, she was also the mommy of bad King John, too. Eh.) Hence the reason I thought you'd be interested. :)

Re:Book Club

I've been reading Lesley Pearse books pretty much since I arrived.  Currently I'm reading "Trust Me", set in the 1940s and 50s (so far).  It's about English children in the welfare system who were sent to the Australian orphanages, and from there they were farmed out like slaves. She's an fabulous writer in that she can really delve into a character, and I'm almost immediately drawn in.  I still struggle with the English-style writing.  By that I mean there is very rarely a "plot", but rather it is someone's story told in intricate detail.

There is a lot of factual historical information in her books, and it adds realism to her story.  The only thing is that I wouldn't recommend them to people who have trouble reading about human suffering.  Poverty, sexism, racism, hunger, abuse, torture, rape ... Ms. Pearse has a way of making it seem crystal clear in your head, and I have openly wept reading some of her stuff.  I think every story has at least one child who is abused and then is never quite the same afterward.  I think it is interesting that she is able to capture a lot of the PTSD symptoms and weave them into her stories.

But her characters are amazing.  Simply amazing.  I cannot easily put her books down.

So far, only page 60ish, but so far, the new Wally Lamb is great. Well written, funny moments. It will tie in Columbine apparantly!! That seems like yesterday!!!
My Mom LOVED the Edgar Sawtelle book. She is sending it to me. So it has Oprah and Mom's endorsement :-)
Whatever you do, and this should be a bookclub thread rule, DO NOT EVER GIVE AWAY THINGS ABOUT BOOKS like endings, etc. Mom says there is a surprise ending. Well, I don't really even want to know that. I'm too smart :-) (humble too) and will look for clues the entire way.....
Would love to read right now, but have to mop the kitchen floor.
How's THAT for discipline?!

The Wally Lamb, The Hour I first believed, or whatever, is off on a one hundred plus page tangent. Not good. Irrelevant to story. Boring. I had to report this. I will continue to finish, but he's diverted too much.

Just read "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova http://www.amazon.com/Historian-Elizabeth-Kostova/dp/0316011770

I really enjoyed that book, if only because I love it when I have to look up words.  "Napery"? Really... :P

This book wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea... It's long on prose, but I love her descriptions and the atmosphere.  The plot is a good one, but she doesn't always flesh it out.

--Trish

p.s. I read Richard Back Illusions when I was 13.  It was an impressionable age. It probably didn't help my catechism lessons.

FYI: I just finished reading a Piccoult, an old one, called Perfect Match. It was not one of her best but it was entertaining and kept you reading. I don't want to give anything away, so I won't. Her books do seem to be all related to crime, dilemmas in what is right and wrong, DNA evindence, and twists on legalities or on evidence that seems one way but has a loophole.
