Re:11%-ers - LOOK HERE!!!
(Date Posted:01/02/2009 09:22:50)
Greetings! Sue Ellen and others interested, Thank you for getting this started. I will need help! I have "resolved" to exercise 3-5 days a week; I like walking, (or treadmill), but find it easy to talk myself out of it! I know I would enjoy and benefit from having a partner to walk with, or walk to - Is anyone else interested in walking? I live at Anderson Lakes Pkwy and Preserve Blvd.......I can easily walk up to Eden Prairie Mall..... thanks, Laura

(Date Posted:01/02/2009 11:24:49)
Way to go, Laura!!! I'm impressed at how quickly you got here and posted! Whoohooooo!!! Good job and THANKS!!
I like your resolutions, too! 3-5 days a week is a good goal!! Do you belong to the Community Center? Or do you have a gym type place near you? Or another gym? Or do you own a treadmill?
We could do a link each day (or every other day might be more realistic) where we tell each other what we did for workouts.... I always find that if I have to tell other people that I did a workout, I'm more likely to do it - that accountability factor.
Anyway - my thoughts are all over the place, I think.
I go to the Community Center almost every day - and Cyndy Mertz (another EPWT member) and I are trying to meet there sometimes. We walked on the treadmill yesterday chatting away and then did the eliptical after that - chatting again! Time goes by so much faster when you're chatting with a pal! :)
You could post here what you PLAN to do - and then re-post when you've done it! I'll check here as often as I can! I am trying to make signing into the forums (here and the Cyprus Women of Today's forum - we're attempting to do an extension Internationally!!) every morning at the least! I'll try to do it more than once a day - but sometimes once is all I have time for, too.
I'll make notes of what is said here (like you wondering if anyone else is interested in walking at the mall) for our meetings until we get more people posting here - hopefully it'll help with getting the forum going, too!
Check out other areas of the forum, too, if you haven't already! It's a good way to keep in touch with people between events and meetings - but so far it's been the same few people posting so it hasn't taken off quite yet as much as we hoped.
You should also create a profile for yourself - if you need help with that, email Stacy and ask her how (or I could help too - but she's better at explanations of this sort than I am).

RE:11%-ers - LOOK HERE!!!

Reply to toppings17 (01/02/2009 16:08:11).
But let's try hard to get us all on the same page here with 11%-ers! :) For now, how about giving us your goals, ideas, thoughts, resolutions, etc.. Some questions to spur your thoughts into words are:
1. What are your health & fitness goals? 2. What type of exercise do you enjoy the most? 3. What 'diets' have you tried in the past and what did it teach you about how YOUR body works? 4. What would you like to see here regarding health & fitness? 5. What are you looking for with 11%-ers - a walking buddy? recipes? logging/journaling info? accountability? all of the above?
OR you can write anything you want - doesn't have to answer ANY of these questions! Let's just get the ball rolling here on the Forum. |
1. My health goals include finishing losing my 11% body weight. Stuart is still working toward this goal. We have already seen some of the benefits of weight loss. I am no longer borderline diabetic -- I'm in the "normal" range for the a1c test. Yay me! I would like to finish the weight loss so that I can get my reward. No more waxing or shaving for me, laser that leg hair! I also want to do more back and abdomen exercises to strengthen my torso.
2. I like to walk and bike, and I miss swimming in a pool. Wait, does nookie count as exercise? If it does, I'm totally changing my answer.
3. I have tried so many diets in the past that I couldn't list them all. I think the only one that really works is writing stuff down. Every other diet just makes me feel deprived or irritable. I don't need anything else but to see what I'm eating to know what is not right with my diet. So that is my goal for this year -- to write it down!
4. I would just like to hear from other people in this forum, because I won't be there to do any exercise with you. You could always come here... :D
5. I am looking for accountability and support. I want to have a daily mental check for myself to remember this is a priority in my life. I think it's too easy for me to push it to the back burner, and I'm hoping that writing about it will help me think about it more.
I'm glad you're pursuing this forum again, Sue Ellen. I've checked it daily for so long, but knew I couldn't push using it from this far away. It is a great tool, and you are a great person to lead the 11%-ers!

(Date Posted:01/02/2009 16:31:16)
I'm trying to get more people interested in the forum! I agree - it's a great venue for things like 11%-ers and other types of discussions - might make the meetings go a little quicker - we have so much already on the agenda that any discussions make for long long meetings!
I like your goals for the year! Yes - Nookie Counts!!! Yay you (and Stu!) ha!
I agree - writing stuff down just works. It's a hard habit to create, though, if you ask me. Weight Watchers pretty much requires it, too - and although I don't do my journaling like I am supposed to 95% of the time, I still see it's benefits when I DO do it!
At meetings, it seems people ARE interested in 11%-ers - so it's just a matter of getting it running itself - like Share Your Light Nights. I think if we get some of the new members out here and talking it up at the meetings, we'll be onto something good! :) Thanks for keeping hope in us/me!

RE:11%-ers - LOOK HERE!!!
(Date Posted:01/02/2009 16:47:58)
I like your goals for the year! Yes - Nookie Counts!!! Yay you (and Stu!) ha! Dude, Sweet....
I think you are right in that it is just a matter of really getting the ball rolling, because you need to have enough people interested that if one person has to back off for a few weeks, it will continue to function.
"Being more healthy" or "losing weight" or "exercising more" are also just so broad and sweeping, that it is hard to figure out how to consistently make it part of daily life. Specific jobs are easier because they are more defined, and the more we understand the parameters of what we need to do, the easier it is do that job. At least that is why I think I tend to fall of the healthy wagon. I just get too overwhelmed by the enormous scope of the endeavor, and I flounder in all the responsibility.
Something else might fall apart, and I jump back into old, known behaviors that might be very comforting but equally unhealthy. If I'm having an absolute crap day, I just have a hard time looking forward to a cold salad. Give me thick soup with lots of crusty bread! Let's follow it up with cups of tea and biscuits! And then it's just a slippery slope until I'm eating Ferraro Roche's whenever the kids leave the room. :p
Well, I forgot to talk to Viki (see other forum) http://cypruswomenoftoday.aimoo.com/ about getting some ideas for what we can do once the kiddies are back in school. I'm hoping we can do some walking and/or meditation on Wednesdays, since that is the day I'll be with her (has to do with Quinn being in soccer camp). I'd like to spend some time walking along the seaside or one of the beaches, though she keeps threatening to take me for a walk in her mountain village...
Okay, I think I'm well on my way to a tangent, so I'm going to rein myself back in. I'm looking forward to seeing more EP-ers hanging out here, though I'm bound to forget that you have the added challenge of that funny white stuff you guys keep outside, at least in winter. :D Maybe you'll be able to pity me when summer rolls around and I'm Lobster Girl.

RE:11%-ers - LOOK HERE!!!
(Date Posted:01/02/2009 20:59:05)
Hi everyone! I love hearing from Trish - it's like she's still here with us. We miss you!!
My goal for this year is to lose 20 pounds. It's been my goal for the last couple of years, but for some reason (ok, vending machine), I lose a few, then gain them back. I need to get into my head that this has to be a long term lifestyle change, not just a short time thing that I can quit when I reach my goal.
I do jazzercise 3-4 times a week now, but am actually considering joining a gym, since I really enjoy the treadmill. Put on the headphones, some disco music and I'm in the zone. Also, I'm finding that my body has probably adjusted itself to the jazzercise routine, and I need to kick it up a notch.
I try to eat healthy, and typically log all of my food intake on a website called fit.com. You can track carbs, calories, whatever you want. I've tried the low carb diet, but seem to do better on the calorie counting, as long as I don't blow it with donuts or cookies.
I also have a major problem with portion control. I can buy a box of the 100 calorie oreo packs, but then eat 3-4 of them at one sitting. Since I'm not accountable to anyone but myself, nobody will know, right?
I need a Jillian (you know, the trainer from the Biggest Loser). I bet she could whip my butt into shape!!
I'm happy to be a part of the 11%ers, and look forward to conquering those 20 pounds with all of you and your help.

I too am trying to lose weight. So far I've lost almost 10 pounds. . . . 30 to go. Here is what is working for me, and what's not. My best friend from NJ and I call each other in the Morning, Monday, Wednesday and Fridays to get ourselves out of bed and working out. So far it's been three weeks and it's working great. When I want to sleep in, I know I can't because I would be letting my friend down.
I am a member of the community center too, and am trying to get there more often, but it seems during the week I can only do my treadmill at home before work. It's next on my list to go and work out more there. I think weekends with my kids is going to be the best bet.
Time and motivation are my enemies. So working out in the AM before I can build up an excuse it the only way I seem to be able to work out.

You're funny. :P It's not like I'm dead. I'm just awake when you're asleep. Thought I must admit I love the fact that this forum will be used more frequently. I have missed all of you so much! I think that you can get those 20 lbs off this year, even if that means you have to step it up a notch. I know that my body has got used to walking more, or I've become more Cypriot in that I must park DIRECTLY outside a shop, and not walk too much. But I would imagine that you're right about the little sabatoges that hurt the worst -- for you the vending machine and oreo packs, for me, the discovery that I love the fish and chip shop. (I used to only eat fried food once a month, now it is more like 6 times a month.) Kelly, Sue Ellen used to be that person for me. We'd work out together because we both hated disappointing each other. There was certainly no other person that could get me up at 5:30 a.m. I also need to exercise in the morning, because by the end of the day, I am so fatigued and in pain. During the first part of the day, I am able to manage my fibromyalgia pain with self-hypnosis, but I can't maintain the mental construct to the end of the day. My energy reserve just peters out about 5 or 6 pm. Such is the way of life, and so I'll do what I can do, when I can do it. Trying to exercise late in the day just sets me up for failure. Well, it's after noon, and the shops all shut around here in an hour, so I'd better hightail it out of here. Nothing has been open for the past 3 days because of the holiday, and the shops shut midday Sat and don't open until Monday morning. This includes grocery stores, pharmacies, and petrol stations. We need food, gas, a car wash, and some cough drops! Eek. I'll never get used to the shops shutting so dang often. At least the bakery is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. 11%-ers - LOOK HERE!!!
(Date Posted:01/03/2009 09:58:52)
Hey Sue Ellen--look at all the responses!! Good job.
I haven't given much thought yet to my health/fitness goals for 2009 but I will post them when I figure it out.
Trish--I agree with Carol that it is almost like you are here when we get to read your entries! Congratulations on your A1C!! that is soooo wonderful. I,too, have had some success on that front. My numbers have been horrible for the past two years BUT I am almost in the normal range now!! I can't believe how much better I feel and I am off most of my meds!!
I hope the forum catches on (especially with us NON techies)... I will try to check daily and participate--thanks for getting it going again.

It's great to hear from you, too. I can hear your voice and that perpetual laugh that always seems to be bubbling beneath the surface. :D I wanted to remind you that you already have a profile on this board... http://profile.aimoo.com/bethwojahn . All you have to do is remember the password, or go to the password help section. You can sign in at the top of the front forum page. http://forum1.aimoo.com/District_11_Women_of_Today (look at the very top). I hope that you'll be a frequent visitor, as I am having too hard of a time keeping in touch often. This is easy, and fun, and I can come back to it as often as time allows. Wooo hooo! Stuart is trying to clean up the spare bedroom right now (no, Sue Ellen, not for room for your bed, but rather for his scalextric track), so I'm at a loose end for an hour or so. I am enjoying the quiet (the kids just went to bed). :D Beth, you can't forget to let us know what your goals are, otherwise I'm going to start rumors that your goal is to take up pole dancing. Or belly dancing. I'm not above pretend threatening people, so don't make me whip out my imaginary verbal arsenal. :P -Trish

Pole dancing is offered at the Plymouth Community Ed. I can't believe it. My daughter can shop at Victoria's Secret AND pole dance. Wow. What progress since I was a tike.... (ugh)
One thing I do want to look into is Pilates. My sister says it really strenghened her abs. I got a Pilates for Dummies video at the thrift store and will try it within the next week or so.
Trish, and all of you actually, The nookie is exercise depending on how you do it. It is a good reinforcing loop tho. Because the more you exercise and limber up, the more variety in the nookie, the more nookie, the more exercise and so on...... :-) I'd better stop here unless I want to tell you Well, just imagine..... :-)

To be honest, Viki and I were going to see if there were any belly dancing teachers around (she already knows how and says it's great fun). I am not sure I'm ready for Pilates, yet... something of a mental block for me.
Nookie is kind of like that bean song we sung as kids.
Beans, Beans. The magical fruit. The more you eat, The more you toot. The more you toot, the better you feel. So eat more beans!
Nookie, Nookie. The magical one. The more you do, The more the fun. The more the fun, The better you feel. So have more nookie!
It's all good. :-)
But in the meantime, I think a few of you ought to sign up for the belly dancing class, and let us know how it goes. I'll see what Viki and I can find here.

My goal is to continue with my weight loss. Mostly I need to increase my activity and cut back on the bad foods - but I am just taking it one week at a time at this point. I have lost 13 pounds. I cheated a bit over the holidays so I am probably back up a bit - but staying at my parents house was rough...low fiber/high carb meals are not good for my waistline.
