I don't have a cell phone. Before cell phones everybody(except me)had a pager--ofcourse this was worn so that it was exposed. I didnt have one and started to wear my garage door opener to look like a pager to give me a status symbol. Problem was I didnt have a garage door opener. Well today,I had my 22 year old garage door replaced. I think it was a 10 year door and the past 12 I have patched it,caulked it,and babied it every way possible. I went the full monty too. Now have a garage door opener--first one ever for me. I can put my double knit leisure suit on and put that remote where all can see and really have a status symbol now. The new door with opener was mainly for my wife. She bought herself a new car and has actually been parking it in the garage. Who ever heard of such? Double car garage and with all the add ons I did over past year, there was room for her small car.Now you want to hear the really weird part? I moved some stuff around and cleaned the garage a little and my van is in the garage too. A double car garage with two vehicles in it--bet that's a first. Is for me anyways,so now I have a remote and besides the status symbol, will actually be able to use it. I keep my atv and riding lawnmower in a shed--that makes sense--but whoever heard of actually parking a car in a garage?

..........Donna will be able to park her car in the garage when I die .

BYW, I do NOT have a cell phone, nor did I have a pager. In fact I will barely answer the phone when I'm at home unless I know the person leaving a message. I was told once that not answering the phone was rude(!?). Well tough beans, but there you have it.

Waksupi--speaking of parking a vehicle in a garage,I bet with the Montana temperatures you have to scrape a lot of ice off the windshield of your pickup. There were two K-Marts here that closed down. You could buy em both and load them on that huge pickup of yours and put both buildings together to make one you could possibly get the front end (windshield area)out of the weather and eliminate some scraping.

Carpetman,  Our previous house had a one car garage that had to double as a laundry room, triple as a storage room, and quadruple as my gun shop.  This new place has a three car garage which has been converted into a wide two car garage with a separate shop room.  Now Mama's car is parked in the garage for the first time in either of our lives.  Of course, my pickup is still outside because the garage is where all the boxes we haven't unpacked yet are.  Incidentally, my status symbol is that I DON'T have a cell phone because I won't be bothered.  Now that's my idea of cool!  curmudgeon

Carpetman - It is an excellent idea to get both of those abandoned stores. I could hold races for at lease forty pickups of the size I drive at one time. On the other hand, we could only get one of your size pickups in at a time for time trials. I don't know what we would do after that, though!

Did hear a funny from the guy that installed my door. He used someones .243"and it was over and under". He was serious--it was over and under in that the scope was mounted high and you could use the scope or the sights.

Ray,

Oh yea.  Turkey specials we call'em.  Popular on levers.  You can tell a guy with a set from a mile off.  When they throw the rifle up, they imitate the native bird.  It's not for the open sights here, it's to keep from shooting off the bell of your 6-18 VXIII.  After season, they just go to a Cyropracticer and get an "adjustment".  That's the status symbol here.

I've been going to buy a set myself, but I want the high model.  Then I can just put the gun to my hip to look through the scope and work the lever like Chuck Conners on, "The Rifleman".

Boy, Rick, I agree there.  I had 4 women in the house until recently.  The teenagers have fled thankfully. Use to be 4 cell phones here, two portable phones, an answering machine and still a race to answer the phone when it rang.  I'm slowing it down some now.

Seems like women don't realize that is someone wants to get in touch with you, they'll call back if it's important.

So pardon me if I don't answer the phone.  Just leave me an e-mail and I'll get back to you sooner or later.  If the house is on fire, don't call me, call the fire department./beagle

Whoever heard of parking a vehicle in a garage?

Garages are for loading rooms and casting rooms.  Now, I'd never think of putting my pickup in my casting room./beagle

Beagle---Until about 15 years ago,my garage was my reloading/table saw room and you are correct, you don't park a vehicle in the reloading room. Then I had mt patio extended across and a room added to park my riding lawnmower in. The room did double duty as my reloading room and crawling across the mower was the norm. Can't imagine what it would be like trying to work around a vehicle, atleast I could sit on the mower. Then my neighbor gave me a storage shed. What a luxury--no mower in the reloading room. Then I extended the patio some more and now have a room for my table saw although too small,I can make do. Then I bought an atv and the storage shed has mower and atv, requires some shuffling, but works. Did I mention I put a folding attic entrance in my garage and decking and have storage space there too? How do we accumulate so much? The old rule if you throw something away you need it the next day still applies.

All these new fangled telephone gadgets, call waiting is almost the rudest. If I'm talking to someone,I don't want to be put on hold while they talk to someone else. I was first in line. Well maybe I wasn't,someone else might be on hold, who knows? ALMOST the height of rudeness are the telemarketers that have a calling system where you answer and have a delay before they come on. But I can relieve some of my frustration by giving them a piece of my mind. The one that really makes me mad are the recorded telemarketer calls and especially where you have to wait before the recorded message comes on. Really rude, you can't cuss em out.

Curmudgeon--Our garage also does duty as the laundry room. Washer and dryer located there. Some things my wife doesn't like to put in the dryer,so she uses hangers and hangs them from the tracks for the door. Well that's ok,except many times I cant raise the door all the way. I have ran into it more than a few times. Be at the right height to be a real head knocker. Well with this garage door opener we wouldn't be able to know if clothes were hanging on it when the opener is actuated. So I bought 10 feet of 3/4 PVC and put up a hanging rod yesterday. Why didn't I do that 22 years ago?

Carpetman,  Speaking of "things she doesn't want to put in the dryer", this morning my wife and I were on the back deck, talking about yard improvement.  A nice neighbor lady from across the road passed the usual "howya doins"  at a volume well calculated to travel 50 yds. One thing led to another, and the neighbor mentioned her recent fall.  She was glad to report that her bosomy build saved her from jaw injuries.  Then ensued a conversation about not knowing they were such great lifesavers, and no breast reduction surgery wanted here.  I wisely stayed silent, but wanted to fall through a crack in the deck.  And they think WE are gross.  curmdgeon

I am "required" to carry a cell and a portable scanner for work. When it doesn't get answered promptly the general reply among us is "Caller id" which also works at home. If I don't know thwm and want to talk to them the message machine answers first. I see so many people that are slaves to the phone and call it such a convenience. Which brings me to On-Star commercials. I just know if I were ever to have an emergency I would be so far out of cell range that digging it out or walking would still be my only option.
There was a plane crash a few days ago east of Kalispell that search and rescue said every one was dead in. they were very happy when a young girl and a young man with a broken back walked out 2 days and nights later. Her clothes were partially burned off as she went back in to pull out 2 others one of whom later died. I assume that if she had a cell she would have gotten in range about the same time she could see town. Gianni.

As Joe can attest, I seldom answer the phone at my house. I figure that infernal thing rings for my wife, and I want no part of it. If I happen to be close to the caller ID when it rings, I might look at it and answer if it's somebody I know. But I usually don't check it, and if you hold the line you'll get my long "Answering Machine Blues" song that insures only those who really seriously want to leave a message will do so. (It lasts about 45 seconds.)

Gianni - You're right about limited cell coverage, especially where the plane went down. I believe they ended up in the Great Bear Wilderness, adjoining the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Damn rugged country, any way you look at it, and plenty of griz to make things more interesting for the survivors. Hard country to cover in good health, let alone someone with a broken back and severe burns.

I had considered a cell phone for back country emergencies, and for hunting the east side. But checking the coverage area maps, no where I may need it, would I get reception. So I do without. Some years ago, the greenies prevented cell towers being put in the backcountry for emergencies. Too bad. I've known of people with appendicitis attacks, heart attacks, and last week, a woman was kicked in the head by a horse. I believe she died.

There are a lot of questions about that crash. Sherriff Dupont is taking a lot of heat on it, since deaths were reported, and families notified. As county coroner, I'm surprised he would have had anything to do with that announcement. I've known Jim for over 20 years, and he isn't the type to jump the gun. I really suspect the report came in from the Forest Service search party, without confirmation. I believe my old Indian buddy was involved in the search, and I'm going to ask him about what happened. From the pictures from the crash site, up in that goat rock, I most likely have made the same assessment of no survivors, if I had only seen it from the air.

I figure unless the company I work for is going to pay for me to have a cell phone, I'm not going to have one.  I did get one for my wife, flat tires @ -20 are more than an inconvenience.  I carry a sleeping bag in the back of the truck during the winter.  I still wonder whey she seems to always have it turned off when I want to call her, I don't know what good a cell phone is if'n it isn't left on to recieve calls.

As far as garages, I had both vehicles garaged until I started building a 22 1/2' boat last November, with all of 2" clearance.  There was still room for my wifes car until last spring, when I figured that space would speed construction by having some additional work space.  My game plan is to get that space back into parking order by the time the snow falls, which gives me a couple of weeks.

With the truck outside last winter, I used the block heater for the first time.  I also got a timer so that I could plug it in when I got home, and it would kick on around 4am, couple hours is really all thats needed to warm the block enough to get the engine up to a reasonable temp.  If you fire the engine up before getting dressed, the cabs pretty warm by the time you leave.  I still miss inside parking though, something to be said for never having to remove snow and ice, and having the interior at room temp.

Paul Ak--When I was in Alaska,my work car was one of those small Nash Metropolitans. Don't remember but the cooling system was like 6 quarts or so(small). I wired up a seperate plug and would plug it in at night and unscrew the fuse. In morning I could tighten fuse and in less than 30 minutes the heater would put out hot air instantly. I also mounted a trickle charger under hood and it also came on when fuse was activated. Is activated the correct word for screwing in a fuse? I don't mean screwing inside a fuse--they aint enough room--well maybe fleas and flies could.
