Hi all, is there a civil Engineer in the house?I'm getting ready to put up my windmill tower, but I don't know how to calculate the size of base that I need. I joined an engr tips forum last night, but it looks like they booted me off because I'm still a student.
Hey, Lar45, did you see that post I made a day or two ago about 2 boxes of factory .470 NE ammo from Federal? It was posted on AR I think. $175 a box. Plus shipping.

You might check to see if your county agent has anything on the subject.
If they have a building dept like most I've seen, they'll tell you how big it must be, what it must be made of, etc, right down to how many nails musr be in it. They MAY let you decide what color to paint it.

Sure better than just some vague ideas.

Wills, you might contact the Houston Power and Light engineering department and ask them for (or use) the program to calculate the forces for such a tower. I was the consultant they used to make the program work, and run on all of the computers there on-hand. The program was written in Fortran, and was made to run on any computer there having such a compiler. At least, they should run the program for you all, if given the input for your tower specs. Maybe mentioning my name, felix m robbins, will allow entry, or a fast exit, don't know which. The program was written in circa 1985 summer. ... felix

Scrounger, yes saw the post.
I'm rolling my own though. I got 100rnds of Fed fired brass from Jeffe, and I'm shooting some 500gn GC cast from a MM mold.

...........Lar45, could you scale down from a high tension tower? There used to be a windmill just up the canyon from us made of steel sucker rod and 2" pipe. In my mind I'm thinking the 4 legs were like 6' apart and it would have been about 25 ft tall. Each leg was bolted to a 2" pipe set in concrete.

I'm afraid that I don't know what sucker rod is??
How much concrete is the question. How deep, how much area?

sucker rod is used in oil wells.
http://www.aermotorwindmills.com/tower_instructions.htm
Anchor holes.. The anchors are the foundation of your tower, so you must exercise care in locating and digging the holes. It is recommended that the bottom 2 feet of the hole be filled with cement and be topped with dirt. The holes should be at least 2 feet in diameter to provide a secure foundation for the tower. See the tower base layout drawing below and to the left.
For 14' diameter or less size mills, the holes should be 4' 9" deep and for 16' mills the holes should be 6' 6" deep. Be certain the bottom of all four holes are level to secure your tower to. Anchor posts cross plates are bolted back to back to the upright. After tightening bolts, place anchor post in holes, but DO NOT fill the holes yet. Attach the loop steps to the tower uprights prior to beginning installation. Then as you construct the tower, you will be able to use the steps to climb.
