I just got a brand new Saeco Iron mold today ( my first ever new mold)  and some people here have suggested Boiling it in hot soapy water to degrease it? Is this the best way or should I try somthing else

FWIW - I soak my iron molds in ACETONE for about 30 min and scrub with a brass brush, swish them around a few times and then let them air dry (about 30 sec), lube the bottom of the spur plate and top of the mold with a #2 pencil, assemble, pre-heat and cast, first set out goes back in the spur box (from the pencil lead in the cavieties).  No oil left on molds or in the pours.

harley45,

Not going to tell you which is "best" way, only passing on some stuff from my "Sounds Like a Good Idea" file.

Cleaning Oil From a Mould Out Of Storage (and other issues)

A good way to clean oil from a mould that has been in storage is to boil it in soapy water for a few minutes.  Then rinse well and boil again in clean water.  Wipe and allow to air dry.

File went on to address rust, etc., which wouldn't apply to your NEW mould.  Happy Casting!

Being a practicing anal retenitive I tend to go over board. I boil the mold in degreaser, then rise, then rise,  Yes twice. Then I hit the mold with carb cleaner wipe down with Q-tips. I never re-oil a mold after cleaning they go into a 30 mm ammo can with discecant (sp) gel packs.

Ain't those Saeco Molds great? Makes ya wonder why Lee, Lyman and RCBS even bother.

I used to boil in hot water also...but the pan/pot still contains the contaniment (oils), so I switched to scrubbing in hot tap water in the lavatory with an old toothbrush and Ivory soap. At least twice. Then rinse well, towel dry, a few minutes under my 50 watt halogen lamp to finish drying. Assemble the handles, then place on my the edge of the pot during warm-up. A new/used mold gets extra attention with the aid of a magnifying glass to inspect vent lines and a quick check of the alignment pins for proper fit before 1st use.

For me the simplest way is usually the best.

I use brake cleaner, a couple shots on the block tops, faces and cavities and a shot on the bottom of the sprue plate, I don't bother with the rest of the mold, heat it up when it quits smoking it is good to go.

Good luck
