Ok guys I decided to go with the 45-70 Katahdin barrel after shooting a friend of mine's Marlin Guide gun loaded with 405 Rcbs bullet @ about 1400 fps. I realize that as velocity goes up so will the recoil. I figure that I could work up slowly till I get to where I get the best accuracy & velocity that I can stand to shoot. So I would like to know if you guys have a good load for the 405 grain bullet? Also would it make much of a difference between a PB & a GC Bullet? I will probably be buying commercially cast bullets that are available. Thanks.

I'd go with a PB bullet. At the velocities you will be shooting, I see no need for a gas check, plus the fact you may put a card wad under the bullet base anyway.

Rich,

A lot of variables here.

If it were me, I would go with a gas check design.  Then you are safe to go on up, or simply run faster powders at that same level if that is your choice.  Then you can always try a plain base later.  With ebay, no mold purchase is a mistake and can't be sold if you change your mind later.

So I am recommending playing the odds with the GC since this is your first attempt.

Now I have to get in here on this, just to throw gas on the fire. Oh,Ken, ya kinda got excited to see RJ post here and put yours in the wrong place, LOL.
Any way, RJ neglected to inform all of you that he is now officially retired and has nothing to do. And look at him, buy store bought boolits!
I hate to see a fellow get bored and watch Oprah all day. Next thing he will be wanting to "primp" up the yard and such. So please jump in here and see if we can all save him before it is to late.
Rich, I will keep my eyes open for some casting stuff, just to get you started<grin>.
