Try 4350 first, Corky, with regular primers. 4831 is a might slow, and has enough air space between the granules to allow the mag primer to force a condom loose before ignition. However, it never hurts to try various mag primers with 4831, but I would reserve the winchester maggie until last resort. The last resort would be to fill the case with a ball powder in that 4831 speed. Not 860, which if used would destroy the velocity desired from the cartridge. ... felix

Felix, from the charts I'm looking at, both flavors of 4350 are a tad slower than 414, so starting at the same charge ought to be good with the Rem or Fed regular primers. Need to run'em across the chrono at this point to see what they're doin'. One problem with the stick powder is getting it into that 22 neck. It's so short that I can't use the dump or regular powder funnel, had to rig up a home brew funnel using a cutoff .17 Hdy glued into a cutoff 243 to make a funnel. Works, but stick powder tends to bridge real easy in the tiny opening. Like I said, this has been fun, and a nice divesrion from REAL BOOLITS. Prolly just a passing FAD!!!! sundog

Sundog, it's too bad we still have gobs of older powder laying around to use up. Dan is correct in that trying the new powders should be more beneficial all the way around. Not only because of the temp gradient insensitivy, but mainly, for us 22 and 24 shooters, they burn much, much cleaner. Cleaner powder means better lead boolit accuracy without cleaning the barrel between relays. My BR gun loves the VV powders for the lack of soot produced. The lever guns, or bigger caliber guns, could care less about the dirty powders. ... felix

Well, 42.0 IMR 4350 and a 75gr Hdy AMax works. 50.0 will fill the case enough to not move with bullet seated, but that might be too much. We'll work on it. This is kinda like working with the big belted magnums. Now I need to load a few more for 200 yd test and chrono. And 4350 runs thru my home brew 17 cal funnel okay, too. sundog

With the Hdy 75 gr BTHP, 48.0 Re22 also works. Only got off a couple rounds last night before dark, but it looks promising and burns clean. Need to shoot at 100/200 and chrono. 48 grains is almost enough to fill to bullet base. After I find out how fast it's going we might be able to fill it to no air space or very lightly compressed. Not much hope this will ever be a cast boolit launcher, but then again coyote and pdog huntin' at 300 yards..., well. PITA making the brass, but I think we're 'there'. sundog

Sundog,
Try one of the (new?) powder funnels/scale pans from Lyman. I bought a bit of reloading stuff not too long ago, and this little $4 gem was the star purchase!

Well, I still hane not found any load data naywhere for this thing. So, with 7 loaded rounds (48.0 Re22) I took it to the range yesterday along with my 03 sporter and some real boolits. I put 2 rounds in one target to check zero at a hunert. The other 5 were on another for group -- sub 1-inch. Wx was clear, 60dF, shooting north into a NW wind at 12-15. Did not chrono. I think I'll hold what I got til I do get to chrono, maybe today. Again, I doubt that the Chetah will ever be a cast boolit launcher. To much powder capacity and too much twist.
Also shot the 700VSLH in 308. Four 5-shot groups all under an inch the smallest I measured because it was neat - 0.665. This is with brass that is not fireformed, a picked out the book load of 4895, and Hdy 150 SPs - a hunting bullet. Not bad! Once I get enough brass formed and the bbl broke in good, I'll be trying one of Chargar's favorites in his 700 VS, the RCBS 308-165-SIL. I expect great things, needless to say. sundog

Well, I got an update. I backed off 2 grains to 46.0 RL22. This thing is now shooting consistent 1-inch 5-shot groups at a hunert. Got another 50 cases loaded for fire forming -- PITA. Will do them next trip to the range. I'm thinking now of trying some of the Nosler or Berger 80 grainers since this thing has an 8 1/2 twist. Been a fun project, but won't ever be much of a cast boolit launcher.... What I have noticed now is that it looks like I can seat bullets with any neck sizing on the fully formed cases. Will try that with a few and see what happens. sundog

Sundog--If you tried cast in that Chetah I missed it. Except in my .223,I have found them to do well. If you want to try some let me know and I'll send em out.(They are the 58 grain gas checked FWFBL, RCBS pills).

Thanks, C-man! I've got that mold and can't get even close to the throat. Eddie cut one cavity out longer to a RN and haven't tried it yet. Problem with this round is much like the 7mmRM - fast twist, really SHORT neck, and really BIG boiler room. Figuring on how to make all that an advantage for cast boolits may be a bit of a problem. Now that same boolit is a real dandy in my .222 Rem. sundog
