Here's the deal with a heavy 7mm. 1) As a heavyweight it is too long for a set of Lee 6 cavity blocks. 2) It would probably have to go in a SC set of blocks 3) RCBS makes an excellent heavy 7mm 2 cavity mould (7mm-168. Mine drop at about 172grs) but it is a bore rider. The bore rider HAS to ride the lands to do well, at all. 4) Thinking was for a blunt flat nosed Loverin type (or Lyman 'Hi-Velocity' type).Number 3in this photo is the Lyman Hi-Velocity styleThis is my 8mm design.A kind of bastardized Loverin cum Hi-Velocity hi-bred. Lee makes a single cavity 135gr 7mm slug, which is a bore rider. It would probably fit a 6 cavity but it's short and light and has the bore rider requirement. Since the early objective was to fill a long military 7x57's throat and leade (including the worn ones) it kind of rules out a short bore rider. Lyman makes a 150gr RN Loverin. A kind of middle weight bullet, but it's 90% Loverin body can work well in both newer and somewhat worn militaries. The only design missing is the fat long heavy Loverin. If you were interestted in doing this, I would open a new thread specificly to see what people wanted. A Lee 6 cavity is popular but limits weight (via lack of allowed length). Or a fat long flatnosed Loverin type, which would require being done in a single cavity set of blocks. There may be some resistance to the single cavity. Yet it's the most economical mould. Checking Dan's (Mountain Moulds) it appears a 175gr 7mm is too long for his boring bars, otherwise you could get a 2 cavity from him for $70 or so. Unless you go to NEI or Hoch I'm not aware of other custom mould makers in a reasonable price range. Now if people WANT a short 7mm so it could be put up in a 6 cavity set of blocks, that a different thing. But that's not how the whole deal started out. Anyway, open a new thread and see what folks want. ...............BuckshotWell "Folks" let's talk about it!Captain

Captain, I started out thinking this project was going to result in a boolit of Lovern type, suitable for cavernous early Mauser throats.  If such a projectile can be only SC, so be it.  I don't want to compromise the original idea for a mould that will make a lesser boolit faster.  I am delighted with the 8mm heavy that Buckshot designed and look forward to a similar mould in 7 mm.  curmudgeon

............I too would go for a heavy non-boreriding 7mm.

I'd go for the heavy Loverin in a single cavity for the surplus 7mm's.

Guys,

Is anything happening with this project?

I would be interested in any accurate 7mm boolit.  I guess my preference would be a Loverin type with a generous meplat.

I have tried the Lee bore rider and the nose was way to small to ride on the lands of either of my 7mm mausers.

.............Seems to be kind of dead at the moment. We'd get the idea up before the group and something else would come up and overhsadow it. There is a REAL need for a fat heavy 7mm boolit design, and a Loverin eliminates any land issues, plus gives the greatest engraving surface. A win-win scenario, especially in long throat & leade rifles. Add in worn rounded lands and it's the only real way to go. Problem is, such a slug won't fit the Lee 6 cavity blocks, and that's what everyone seems to want. I'll grant that casting one at a time is a pain, but for such a slug that's the price to be paid.

Buckshot & all:

Several one shot molds would indeed be better that none at all.............

Perhaps after the move, folks might be interested in a mold project........

I would be willing to handle the issue if other design the mold...........
