Where can a feller buy a factory small bore muzzleloader .32 or .36 caliber rifle fairly reasonable? I want to try squirrel huntin with one of these. The only squirrel I shot with black powder was a shotgun and a revolver in .44 wasn't much left after I shot it with the revolver. 8mmshooter

I imagine Dixie Gun Works is going to be your best bet. I haven't got a new catalog for a couple years, but they usually have some decent lower end .32's and .36's.

I do need to get another catalog from them. They are as much fun to read as an old Herter's catalog!

This is my first look and post under the BP forum!

I have a dixie .36 Kentucky style rifle that was built from a kit. The kit must have been 30 years old when it was finally assembled...10-15 years ago. Anyway, on with the tale; the barrel was originally about 42" long but there was a rough spot about 10" down and it refused to shoot. So, out came the hacksaw and i lopped off the offending portion, filed the muzzle smooth and recrowned. It shoots damned good now! Strange thing is, it likes heavy charges. i started out real light, using a 38 special caseful...just a pop gun and groups varied widely. So, I started bumping the charge upwards and finally when i got to using a 30-30 caseful, things got good. Yeah, i know it defies normal reason but it works and be damned if I am complaining. I have killed lots of squirrels with it, one deer and several dogs. Rest assured, a .36 caliber ball...about 75 grains, at 1500fps will tear a squirrel's head right off.

...........Just about any of the usual suspects should have 32-36's on hand. Cabelas, Dixie, Track, Pecatonica. Check Navy Arms, Pedersoli, and Traditions websites too. One of the Tuesday shooters has a 36 Cal marketed by Traditions (he bought it locally) and it seemes to be well enough made and is a reliable shooter. An aqauintance of mine who was shooting BP about the time I was born was shooting a 32 or 36 cal cap gun once, and making little bottlecap sized groups at 50 yards. Velocity was up around 2K FPS at the muzzle. He's built the rifle himself from parts.

Jumptrap - Some will shudder in horror that I would even suggest this. So, with appropriate glee, I shall carry on.

In you .36, try 4f for your main charge. Start out at about fifteen grains and work up five grains at a time. You will probably reach a load in the 30-40 gr. range for best accuracy. And 4F will absolutely make a .32 or .36 crackle!

Ric,

the only dealer around here who carries black, doesn't stock 4F  because i was going to use it. I discovered what 3F does in a 50 and 54 and never looked back. I don't know how much speed a 30-30 caseful of 3F will make a 36 ball go, but it moves right along. I ain't much of BP fan but have played with the few I own to some degree. I find a worn out t shirt makes the best patches.....soaked in spit and rammed home.....and god forbid all that damned 'tamping' the neophytes do.....talk about a lopsided ball!

I have one of the "cheapie" Traditions Crockett .32 rifles, a sort of Hawken-like half-stock.  It's a nice little rifle for what it is, and shoots right well with 30 grains of Goex 3F and patched round ball.  That 4F idea sounds like it's worth a try, but the accuracy my rifle has shown is acceptable--minute of ground squirrel to about 50 yards, jackrabbit past 75 (maybe).

The only time I ever used 4 F as a main charge I noticed that the gun fouled out pretty quick.  It took a complete scrubbing after 4 shots.  In a 40 the velocity was somewhat erratic also.  If I owned a 32 I would give it a try.
