Working up a healthy desire to see how one of these handles conicals at long range. Anyone have experience with one? Buckshot, old buddy, don't you have one on your Pecatonica Rigby? (Sent you an e-mail)

AR, 18 twist would be perfect for 1000 yard competition using 500-600 grainers. ... felix

HI FOLKS!

I'AM NEW TO FORUM BUT ALSO INTERESTED IN THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS FAST TWIST, WHAT BULLETS ARE USED  .458'S LIKE MY 45-70 500 GRAINERS. I THINK IT WOULD BE A MUCH SIMPLER WAY TO COMPAIRED TO BPRC.

I HAVE IN MY POSSESION LOCK,STOCK AND BREACH PLUG FROM A T/C RENAGADE 50 CAL. AND FULL USE OF A COMPLETE MACHINE SHOP. I THINK THERE MIGHT BE A PROJECT HERE!

ANY SUGGESTIONS OR AM I WAY OFF TRACK?

.............Charlie45, Welcome to the board. Glad to have you! Need a few more frontstuffers posting. Look down the list 5-6 posts to one about my Rigby LR match rifle. However, if the answers aren't there of aren't clear, please ask away!

thanks for the greeting buckshot2! i'am thinking more on the line of a barrel with deeper rifling, sat .010 to .014 to use a softer alloy. this would sit on top of an over powder wad, grease cookie or cardboard disk.

i know that green mountain barrel sells barrel blanks for bpcr's, but not sure of rifling depth. what ya think, nuts or what???

Charlie: Your should be able to get full specs on bore and groove from the Green Mountain Web site. I believe, though, that the barrels are .450/.458, 1:18 twist. I am sure you could make an accurate and powerful rifle on the Renegade chassis with one of these barrels, but you may have to monkey with the breech plug threads. Also, because of the pressures gnereated by shooting conicals and heavy charges, the serious guys are going to platinum lined nipples to eliminate nipple erosion issues. Too, the back pressure can re-cock the hammer if your spring isn't stout.

Some of the guys using this barrel prefer a dead-soft .442 slug paper patched to bore diameter.

Hi Charlie45, Welcome to the forum.  I am of the opinion that your Renegade stock may be of a less desired style for a shooting stock of a LRML. The "drop" may be too great. If you look close at the Rigby style you will see a totally different style of stock...not just the pistol grip, but how it forces your head up.  I don't think "You're way off track" but I do think you have your work cut out for you. At the same time, I'm sure it can be done.

In my Rigby copy accuracy was never up to what I expected. When I used paper patched boolits the accuracy took a BIG jump. I should also try a harder slug. I do feel the shallow .004" grooves may be to blame. Yes, it's .450x.458".
