Shooter 575: I clicked on The History Channel last night at 11 PM and saw a lot of friendly , familiar black powder shooters on the new showing of our Artillery Games at Camp Graying. We missed the Long Range Historic Artillery Shoot that Matt Switlak and Loomis Battery put on each year at Grayling .The segment that really got my attention was John Well's Parrot black powder gun crew out shooting a modern Canadian Artilley Light Gun section for accuracy in direct fire at long range. The Canadian gun crew looked proficient, but they did'nt put a ball through the target at the rangesour Civil WarRed Legsnormally shoot even though the had a lazer range finer on their modern cannon. If I remember correctly Norm Gibson laid the muzzle loader and John Wells checked it. It ain't how good your gun is -it's how good you can shoot it. John was pulling the laynard for his friction primersalmost straight back to keep from pulling the tube out of line of sight. We have been using a burning rope on a linstock on our twoold, origional Model 1841 six pounders, but Norm Gibson and the 1st South Carolina still whoops us.This is one show I'll order a tape from The History Channel to keep along with the ones we have from the American Shooter. There was a post on www. n-ssa.org that this years Artillery Games would not conflict with a Skirmish-hope so.Merry ChristmasBill Klaus

I saw that also on the history chanel Bill.Good show. We just may a new legal tube for our carrage by next year. We will see. I shot up there on a 3" Parrott crew in 87.We were using exploding rounds with service loads at 2,200 yards. After a couple shots all 4 of the 12 lb guns were hitting that old APC or getting real close. No one was more suprised that the National guard cannon cockers.

Back then the Paulson brothers brought their 30 lb Parrott. That thing was huge. Had to depress the tube to load it. I remember one of the brothers saying they brought enough powder and shell for 75 rounds.Aint taking any back. If I remember right they used 3.5 lb for service load and had 3 lb in the shell.

If shooting, fixing, making and thunking were easy.Everyone would be doing it.

There are four types of homicide: felonious, accidental,
justifiable, and praiseworthy.
