He certainly did. Howa makes Weatherby Vanguards, and for a while made the Mark Vs. The same basic rifle is made by Howa as the Vanguard, the Howa 1500, and there were earlier models of it made for sale under the Mossberg and Smith & Wesson brands. All Weatherby rifles have been built by assorted gunmakers under contract for Weatherby since the mid 1950s. So you can say "Weatherby is nothing but a trademark" if you like. They're not gunmakers, in any case. They're gun brokers. The Mark V action design was commissioned by Weatherby, and all of the guns they have sold have had features specified by Weatherby. There are some small differences (mainly cosmetic) between a Vanguard and a Howa 1500. (Like the Buick portholes in the side of the Weatherby bolt.) In pre-Mark V days, Weatherbys were built on all sorts of Mauser actions, and Schultz & Larsen built them for a time. A "Real Weatherby" is, and always has been, a rifle made with Weatherby's name on the side.
