I am lusting for a new rifle. I read a story somewhere recently about Savage bringing out a .22 Hornet. I've always had a weakness for the small .22 centerfires and this one has my heart beating faster. Itwill have the Accu-trigger as well and it should be affordable, I think suggested retail was about 440 or and nobody pays retail, right? Savage's web site dealer locator suggested Dick's for my area but no joy there. I'm not sure it is shipping yet; has anyone seen one yet? I wonder if Savage would consider making it is .221 Fireball!

I just read an article about it. Quite interesting. I thought, gee, that looks alot like my 22 magnum rimfire Savage action. Well turns out not to be too different. Actually it does use the root of the bolt handle as one locking lug and there is another opposite of it. The receiver is a real long tubular affair and the barrel has a long shank that threats into the receiver, but the threats are on the front of the receiver tube so that places them back up the barrel. Let me explain. The barrel has a long shank that is a tight fit into the receiver but the threads are not right at the chamber end of it. They are moved towards the muzzle a few inches so they can mate up with the threads at the end of the receiver tube. This makes for a real good barrel support. Then a dovetail is cut across the receiver and deep enough to catch some of the barrel and a mounting stud then locks the two together. Pretty much like Savages high powered model where a barrel nut does the locking of the two parts.

The fellow in the article shot the rifle with various factory loads and various hand loads. I thought factory loads were just okay, but where my eyes openned were the handloads. They ALL were literally one ragged hole and very small ones too.

It's a very interesting rifle.

Good Morning Starmetal.  Call me TD!

Thanks for the reply.  The article I read was in the April issue of Shooting Times.  I was real impressed with the price in the info table, $374; I was (foolishly) assuming that was suggested list.  I checked Savage's web site and they show a MSRP of $436.  Still, if $374 is the street price it sounds pretty good to me.  I have checked local dealers and on-line distributors and haven't found it anywhere so it must not be shipping yet.

I know I stick out like a sore thumb in this crowd; most of you guys are launching thumb-sized chunks of lead measured in ounces instead of grains but I've always been a fan of the more petite members of our products such as .22 Hornet, 218 Bee (looking for one!), 221 Fireball and .256 Win Mag.  I have a couple of Marlin M62's, one in .30 Carbine (yes, a lever-action .30C!)  and the other in .256 Win Mag that is high on my list of all-time favorite shooters.

Just give that Savage Model 40 some time to get on the market. Suggest manufacture's retail price is just about always higher then what they sell for. You need to find someone that will order it for you for a his fee over the wholesale price.

Nothing wrong with the calibers you load or want to load. I shoot cast out of my CZ 22 Hornet.

I have a few CZ's and my best friend has a bunch of them. They are very hard to beat for the money and the quality is pretty decent.
